Chapter 12: A Shared Milestone

Two weeks had passed since the legal storm broke over the Sterling estate. Outside, autumn had finally stripped the oak trees of their golden leaves, leaving stark, elegant branches against the gray November sky. Inside the nursery, however, time seemed suspended in a warm, protective bubble.
Lily was three weeks old today. The frantic energy of the initial discovery had settled into a rhythmic, almost sacred daily routine. Elena and Chloe had established a delicate, highly functional partnership of motherhood. They shared feeding schedules, diaper changes, and the quiet, bleary-eyed dawn vigils that tested every parent's endurance.
Elena sat in the rocking chair, feeding the infant from a bottle while Chloe bustled around the room, organizing fresh clothes in the mahogany dresser. The easy camaraderie between them felt natural, born from the unique, unbreakable bond of sharing a biological destiny and a common household.
“Her eyes are definitely changing color,” Chloe observed, pausing with a stack of tiny white onesies in her hands. She looked down at the baby, a soft smile breaking across her face. “They’re hazel now. Definitely not your blue, Elena.”
“More like our grandfather’s,” Elena countered with a gentle laugh. “Mother pointed that out at breakfast this morning. Apparently, the Sterling stubbornness is encoded right into the iris.”
The door opened silently, and Beatrice stepped inside, carrying a small silver tray with three cups of tea. At sixty, the matriarch looked slightly more relaxed, the lines around her eyes softening as she watched her daughters working in quiet harmony. She set the tray down on the side table.
“Marcus called from the federal courthouse,” Beatrice announced, pouring the tea with practiced elegance. “The judge has officially approved our private guardianship petition, incorporating Chloe as co-mother with full legal standing. Furthermore, the class-action suit against the clinic has been certified. The CEO was arrested an hour ago at his vacation home in Vermont.”

Elena looked up, a wave of profound relief washing over her. She shifted Lily slightly against her shoulder, patting the infant’s back until she let out a soft, satisfied burp. “It’s really over? The legal nightmare is behind us?”
“The legal battle is won,” Beatrice corrected gently, handing a cup to Elena and another to Chloe. “The emotional healing is a lifelong journey. But for the first time in a very long time, this house feels like a home rather than a boardroom.”
