Chapter 2: Aftermath of the Flame

The silence that followed Mark’s declaration hung heavily over the Sterling estate. Guests murmured anxiously among themselves, their wine glasses held too tightly in sweating palms. Beatrice adjusted the beige fabric of her dress, her breathing measured and calm despite the adrenaline still pulsing through her veins. She stepped back toward the terrace doors, creating a protective barrier between the chaos of the lawn and the safety of the interior manor.

Chloe remained on her knees in the grass, her hands trembling as she stared up at Mark. The fierce, irrational anger that had propelled her across the garden had vanished, replaced by a hollow, shuddering realization of what she had almost done. Mark stood over her, his chest heaving beneath the light blue button-down shirt. The scrape on his left forearm from his desperate dive across the fire pit began to ooze a thin line of blood, but he did not notice the pain. His focus remained entirely fixed on the woman who had endangered an innocent life for the sake of a delusion.

“Mark, please,” Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible over the distant hum of traffic from the main road. “You don’t understand the pressure. You weren’t there when the hospital called. Everything is spinning out of control.”

“Pressure doesn't give you the right to attack a newborn, Chloe,” Mark replied, his voice hard, devoid of the warmth that had once characterized their long friendship. He clutched the white-wrapped bundle tighter, his thumb gently stroking the baby’s cheek to ensure the infant remained undisturbed by the emotional debris surrounding them. “What happened today crosses every line. You put this child directly in the path of fire. Literally.”

Beatrice walked over, placing a steady, comforting hand on Mark’s shoulder. At sixty, her composure was a fortress. She looked down at Chloe not with anger, but with a profound, exhausting disappointment. “The authorities will need to be notified, Mark. We cannot sweep this under the rug simply because we share a last name and a history. Chloe’s mental state has deteriorated past the point of family intervention.”

Chloe flinched at the word authorities, her eyes widening in sheer terror. “No, Beatrice, please! Not the police. If they get involved, they’ll take everything away from me. You know why I reacted the way I did. It’s about Elena. It’s about what happened at the clinic.”

Mark frowned, his protective instincts warring with a sudden spike of confusion. Elena was Chloe’s younger sister, currently recovering in a private wing upstairs from a complicated birth. The mention of the clinic sent a chilling ripple through the conversation. “What does Elena have to do with this baby, Chloe? Speak plainly right now, or I swear I’m calling the police myself.”

Chloe buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with genuine, quiet sobs that were entirely different from the histrionics of her earlier outburst. The garden party was effectively over; guests were quietly making their way toward their vehicles, eager to escape the wealthy family’s public unraveling. Beatrice signaled for the estate manager to usher the remaining visitors off the grounds, leaving the small family group isolated in the fading afternoon light.
