Chapter 9: Dawn at the Base

The first pale streaks of gray light broke over the horizon, cutting through the heavy morning mist that clung to the manicured lawns of the Vance estate. Inside the upstairs guest quarters, Julian Vance sat on the edge of the neatly made bed, his uniform jacket still rumpled from the previous day's confrontation, his boots unlaced. He had not slept a wink. Every shadow cast by the rising sun against the curtains felt like an advancing executioner.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the polished hallway outside his door, followed by the crisp clinking of brass buttons and web gear. The brass doorknob turned with a sharp click, and the heavy oak door swung open.
Colonel James Thomas, a tall, imposing career infantry officer with silver-flecked hair and an expression carved from stone, stepped into the room. Flanking him were two armed military police officers who immediately moved to secure the perimeter of the small room, their hands resting firmly at their sides.
Julian scrambled to his feet, instinctively reaching out a hand in a desperate gesture of appeal. ""Colonel Thomas... James. You know me. We served together in the Pacific theater. You know my record—""
""Quiet, Captain,"" Colonel Thomas commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that brooked no argument. He did not return Julian’s salute. Instead, he pulled a crisp, folded document from the breast pocket of his tunic and unfolded it with slow, deliberate movements.
""Captain Julian Vance,"" Thomas read aloud, his eyes fixed coldly on the younger officer. ""By order of General Eleanor Vance and endorsed by the Office of the Judge Advocate General, you are hereby formally charged under Article 128 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for aggravated assault, alongside charges of conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman under Article 133.""
Julian staggered backward, the words hitting him like physical blows. ""This is an administrative overreach! My mother is weaponizing her position because of a domestic disagreement—""
""Your mother did not invent the bruises on your wife's body, Captain,"" Thomas interrupted sharply, his voice cutting through Julian’s panicked excuses. ""Nor did she forge the forensic medical report filed by Major Harrison detailing repeated blunt-force trauma to a pregnant civilian. You abused your position of authority, you threatened a civilian citizen, and you brought absolute disgrace upon this uniform.""
Colonel Thomas signaled to the military police officers. ""Take him into custody. Confiscate all remaining service property, strip his insignia, and transfer him directly to the maximum-security holding facility at Fort Meade pending court-martial proceedings.""
""No! You can't do this! Call my mother! I demand to speak to General Vance!"" Julian shouted as the two MPs stepped forward, grabbing his arms with unyielding strength and twisting him around to secure his wrists in heavy steel zip-ties.

""General Vance is the one who authorized your arrest, Captain,"" Thomas replied coldly as Julian was forcibly marched toward the doorway. ""May God have mercy on you, because the court-martial panel certainly will not.""
The heavy oak door slammed shut behind them, sealing Julian’s fate and cutting off his frantic protests as he was led down the stairs and out into the gray morning light, where a waiting military transport vehicle idled with its engine humming, ready to carry him away from the estate and straight toward the reckoning he had so long avoided.
