Chapter 6: The Ultrasound and the Truth

The rhythmic, pulsing whoosh of the portable ultrasound machine filled the luxury bedroom, echoing softly against the mahogany walls like a distant tide. Dr. Harrison moved the cold transducer gel slowly across Clara’s bruised abdomen, her eyes fixed intently on the glowing amber screen of the medical monitor. The room was deathly quiet; even Julian had ceased his agitated pacing, standing frozen by the window as he watched the glowing screen reflect off the glass.
""Heart rate is strong, regular at one hundred and forty beats per minute,"" Dr. Harrison announced evenly, breaking the tense silence. She tapped a few keys on the console to freeze an image frame. ""Fetal development appears normal for twenty weeks, despite the high-stress environment and physical trauma. The amniotic sac is intact, but the uterine wall shows signs of strain from localized impact.""
Clara let out a long, shuddering breath that sounded like years of pent-up fear finally escaping her lungs. She closed her eyes, tears of profound relief streaming down her pale cheeks as she pressed both hands gently against her stomach.
Evelyn, standing nearby, blinked away her own tears and stepped forward to gently squeeze Clara’s shoulder. ""Thank God,"" Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling. ""The baby is strong. Thank God for that.""
Eleanor stepped closer to the monitor, her stern eyes scanning the grey-scaled contours of the developing child. A complex mix of emotions crossed the general's weathered features—relief that her future grandchild had survived her son's brutality, mingled with a burning disgust toward the man who had risked the child's life in the first place.
""Major Harrison,"" Eleanor said quietly, keeping her back turned to Julian. ""Prepare the full medical report, including photographic documentation of the bruising and the fetal assessment. I want three certified copies: one for my personal files, one for the JAG investigative dossier, and one to be handed directly to civil authorities if jurisdiction is contested.""
""Already compiling the data package, General,"" Dr. Harrison replied, expertly disconnecting the transducer and wiping the gel from Clara’s skin with a warm towel before covering her carefully with a fresh sheet. ""The evidence is indisputable. The pattern of contusions on the abdomen matches the size of an adult male hand, specifically consistent with forced suppression against a hard surface.""
Julian could no longer contain himself. He took two rapid steps forward, his face twisted in desperate anger. ""This is a setup! You are all conspiring against me—this girl has manipulated my mother, she has fabricated these medical reports—""
""Captain Vance!"" Dr. Harrison snapped sharply, spinning around to face him with the absolute authority of a senior medical officer. ""As a physician and a commissioned officer of the United States military, my professional integrity is beyond reproach. You are looking at verifiable forensic evidence of severe domestic assault. Do not insult my intelligence by claiming a pregnant woman inflicted these injuries upon herself.""
Julian faltered under the doctor's unwavering gaze. He looked toward his mother for any sign of leniency, any flicker of the maternal partiality that had protected him through minor scrapes and disciplinary warnings throughout his childhood and early career. But Eleanor’s face was carved from granite. She did not look at him; she merely gestured to the two military police officers stationed at the door.
""Escort Captain Vance to the guest quarters down the hall,"" Eleanor ordered, her voice devoid of emotion. ""Confine him there under armed guard until the formal transport arrives to transfer him to the base stockade. Confiscate his sidearm, his comms device, and all military identification.""

""Mother, you can't do this! I am your son!"" Julian shouted as the two MPs stepped forward, their strong hands gripping his upper arms with unyielding professional detachment.
""You stopped being my son the moment you raised your hands against a defenseless woman and an unborn child,"" Eleanor replied coldly, not even turning her head as Julian was forcibly marched out of the room, his protests echoing down the polished hallway until the heavy oak door clicked shut behind them.
