Chapter 14: The Verdict

The ten-minute recess felt like hours as the courtroom settled back into tense anticipation. When the tribunal panel re-entered from the side chambers, the air was thick with the weight of impending judgment. Spectators leaned forward in their seats, and the defense attorneys sat rigidly beside Julian, who stared blankly at the polished wooden table before him, his face devoid of expression.

""All rise,"" the bailiff commanded.

The courtroom stood as the five senior officers took their seats behind the elevated bench. The tribunal president, Colonel Vance, adjusted his glasses and looked down at the formal document lying centered before him. His expression was stern, weathered, and entirely devoid of emotion.

""Captain Julian Vance, rise to hear the judgment of the tribunal,"" the president ordered.

Julian stood slowly, his movements stiff and mechanical as he straightened his bare uniform jacket, his shoulders rounded under the crushing weight of the moment.

""Having thoroughly reviewed all presented evidence, forensic medical reports, digital documentation, and sworn depositions relating to the charges brought under Articles 128 and 133 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, this tribunal has reached a unanimous verdict,"" the president announced, his voice echoing clearly throughout the silent room.

""On the charge of aggravated assault upon a civilian citizen, the tribunal finds the accused: **Guilty**.""

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery before being instantly silenced by a sharp glance from the bailiff. Julian swayed slightly, catching the edge of the defense table with both hands to steady himself.

""On the charge of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman, involving systematic intimidation, coercion, and abuse of military authority to suppress domestic criminality, the tribunal finds the accused: **Guilty**.""

The president paused, taking a slow breath before reading the sentencing disposition. ""It is the sentence of this tribunal that Captain Julian Vance be dismissed with disgrace from the United States Armed Forces, forfeiting all pay, allowances, and retirement benefits, and be sentenced to a term of five years confinement at hard labor in the maximum-security military correctional facility at Fort Leavenworth, effective immediately.""

The gavel struck the block—a final, thunderous crack that signaled the definitive end of Julian’s career and impunity.

""Court is adjourned,"" the bailiff declared.

Two military police officers stepped forward immediately, placing heavy hands on Julian’s shoulders and securing his wrists in steel cuffs. Julian did not resist; his head hung low in absolute defeat as he was escorted away through the side exit, disappearing from the courtroom and from the military institution he had disgraced.

In the front row of the gallery, General Eleanor Vance exhaled a long, slow breath, closing her eyes for a brief moment as the immense weight of the ordeal finally lifted from her chest. She stood up gracefully, smoothing the front of her formal dress uniform. Evelyn stood beside her, offering a warm, supportive smile and placing a gentle hand on Eleanor’s arm.

""It is finished, Eleanor,"" Evelyn whispered softly.

""No, Evelyn,"" Eleanor replied, her grey eyes clear and steady as she looked toward the future. ""It is not an ending. It is a beginning.""
