Chapter 6: The Agency Record

The rain began to drum a steady, melancholic rhythm against the tall arched windows of the manor’s second-floor study. Clara sat stiffly on the edge of a leather armchair, her hands folded neatly in her lap. The white collared blouse she wore was slightly wrinkled from the events of the evening, and her dark vest felt heavy against her chest. Across the mahogany desk sat Thomas Vance, the glow of a green-shaded desk lamp casting deep shadows across his weathered face.

Thomas slid an open manila folder across the leather blotter. Inside lay a single employment application bearing Clara’s neat, careful handwriting.

""You didn't list your mother's maiden name on the onboarding forms,"" Thomas noted, his voice remarkably calm compared to the storm that had raged in the dining room an hour earlier.

Clara looked down at the paper, her dark slicked-back hair catching the lamplight. ""They only asked for my emergency contact. My mother passed away four months ago. There was no one to list.""

Thomas leaned back in his leather chair, interlocking his fingers over his stomach. He studied the young woman before him with clinical detachment masking a deep internal turmoil. She possessed Elena’s sharp, expressive eyes and Arthur’s stubborn set of the jaw—a genetic mosaic that defied coincidence.

""Why were you in the west wing, Clara?"" Thomas asked gently, leaning forward slightly. ""The housekeeping schedule placed you in the east wing all evening.""

Clara hesitated, her gaze shifting toward the heavy velvet curtains covering the study door. ""Mrs. Vance dropped her diamond brooch earlier in the morning during the breakfast service. She told me to check behind the old secretary desk in the library if I wanted to keep my position. When I moved the desk, the panel slid open. The watch was sitting inside a velvet box. I didn't steal it, Mr. Vance. I pulled it out because... because it had a picture of my father inside it.""

Thomas’s breath hitched. He closed his eyes for a brief moment, processing the confession. ""You knew who was in the photograph?""

""My mother left me a small wooden box before she died,"" Clara explained, her voice dropping to a quiet hum. ""Inside was a duplicate print of those two men, though her copy was torn in half. She told me that one of them was my biological father, and the other was a man named Thomas Vance who took everything away from us.""

The confession hung in the air like a physical blow. Thomas felt the blood drain from his face. He stood up abruptly, walking over to the fireplace where a small, quiet blaze crackled behind a brass screen. He reached into his vest pocket, pulling out the silver pocket watch. He flipped the lid open with his thumb, staring down at the cracked glass and the two young men smiling back at him from a simpler, more innocent era.

""Arthur was my closest friend,"" Thomas murmured, speaking more to the fire than to Clara. ""We built this firm together from the ground up. But ambition is a cruel master, Clara. It makes men do terrible things to the people they swore to protect.""
