Chapter 11: The Legal Storm

The rain returned with a vengeance, lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the downtown legal offices. Inside the high-ceilinged conference room, stacks of deposition transcripts and financial audits covered the long walnut table. Eleanor Vance sat at the far end, flanked by two high-priced corporate defense attorneys who looked increasingly grim as they reviewed the documents Thomas had unsealed.

The door opened, and Thomas walked in, shedding his wet raincoat. He looked tired, the stress of the past forty-eight hours etching deep lines around his eyes, but his posture remained unyielding.

""You’ve signed your own death warrant, Thomas,"" one of the attorneys, Marcus Vance- unrelated despite the shared surname—said sharply, tossing a copy of the shareholder transfer agreement onto the table. ""Handing over controlling interest to an unregistered heir without board authorization is a direct breach of fiduciary duty. We can file an emergency injunction to freeze the trust by morning.""

""File whatever injunction you want, Marcus,"" Thomas replied evenly, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite his wife's legal team. ""The transfer was executed under the original partnership clause of 1994, which grants the primary surviving founder absolute authority to rectify historical accounting fraud. Every signature is legally binding.""

Eleanor slammed her hand down on the mahogany table, the sound echoing sharply in the quiet room. Her dark maroon evening suit was replaced by a sharp business blazer, but her emerald earrings flashed with the same vindictive fire. ""You are destroying our entire legacy, Thomas! For what? A guilt trip over a woman who died decades ago? You are throwing away forty years of our life together for a stranger!""

""She is not a stranger, Eleanor,"" Thomas said, his voice dropping to a low, firm register. ""She is Arthur's daughter. And we stole her life before it even began.""

""Arthur made his own bed!"" Eleanor screamed, the veneer of aristocratic composure finally shattering completely. ""He was reckless, he was arrogant, and his division was failing. We only accelerated the inevitable!""

""We engineered his ruin,"" Thomas corrected, meeting her frantic gaze without flinching. ""And we built an empire on top of his grave. I am done living inside that lie, Eleanor. The auditors are already reviewing the secondary accounts. The truth is coming out, whether you sign the settlement papers or fight it in open court.""

The attorneys exchanged uneasy glances, recognizing that a public trial would expose decades of corporate corruption, destroying the Vance name far more effectively than any internal restructuring could ever hope to do.
