Chapter 10: The Heir's Return

The afternoon sun broke through the heavy clouds, casting long golden shafts of light across the marble foyer of the Westchester manor. Clara stood near the grand staircase, wearing her dark wool vest and white collared blouse, holding a small cardboard box containing her few personal belongings. She had decided to leave the estate before the board meeting fallout reached the household staff, unwilling to be caught in the crossfire of the Vance family's collapse.
Footsteps echoed sharply across the marble floor. Thomas hurried through the front doors, his tailored black suit jacket unbuttoned, his grey hair slightly disheveled. He spotted Clara near the bottom of the stairs and quickened his pace, calling out her name.
""Clara, wait. Don't leave yet.""
Clara stopped, turning around slowly to face him. She clutched the cardboard box tightly against her chest. ""The board members are calling for your resignation, Mr. Vance. Mrs. Vance has already left for the townhouse with her legal team. There is nothing left for me here.""
""There is everything left for me here,"" Thomas corrected softly as he stopped a few feet away from her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the silver pocket watch, extending it toward her with an open palm. ""This belongs to you by every right, moral and legal.""
Clara looked down at the watch, the cracked glass lid catching the afternoon light. She did not take it immediately. ""My mother spent her entire life running from what your family did to her. She told me never to trust a Vance.""
""Your mother was entirely right not to trust us,"" Thomas admitted, his voice heavy with genuine remorse. ""We took everything from her. But I want to spend whatever time I have left trying to restore what was stolen—not just the financial assets, but the family name, the honor, and the truth.""
Thomas stepped closer, gently placing the silver pocket watch into Clara’s open hands. The weight of the heirloom settled against her palms, a tangible link to a father she never knew and a mother who had fought to keep his memory alive against impossible odds.
""I transferred forty percent of the founding shares into a trust bearing your mother's name this morning,"" Thomas continued quietly. ""The board can vote me out, they can strip my title, and they can try to dismantle the company, but they cannot undo the legal transfer of those shares. You are the majority stakeholder of Vance & Sterling now, Clara.""

Clara stared down at the watch, her breath catching in her throat. The realization of what had just happened washed over her, replacing her earlier despair with a profound, terrifying sense of destiny.
