Chapter 3: The Weight of Secrets

Sirens began to wail in the distance, a faint, rising shriek that grew louder with every passing second. Inside the hallway, the seconds stretched into agonizingly long intervals. Marcus kept his hands gently pressed against Clara’s damp forehead, murmuring reassurances that felt hollow even to his own ears.
""Stay with me, Clara. The ambulance is almost here,"" Marcus repeated, his voice a low, rhythmic drone designed to keep her conscious.
Clara’s eyelids fluttered, her breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps. She clutched Marcus’s forearm with surprising strength, her nails digging into his skin through the fabric of his uniform. ""The box... Marcus, tell her... tell her it wasn't what it looks like.""
""Don't talk about that now,"" Marcus muttered, his jaw tight. His mind raced back to the hidden floor safe in his study. He hadn't checked it in weeks. Had Clara really been stealing from them? And if she had, what drove her to such desperation while heavily pregnant? The timeline was dizzying. Elena had accused her; Clara had gone into labor during the confrontation. The physical exertion, the adrenaline, the sudden rupture—it all converged into a terrifying medical emergency that eclipsed everything else, yet the shadow of theft lingered like smoke.
Elena remained standing near the staircase, watching them with an expression of profound alienation. The distance between her and Marcus felt insurmountable, measured not in feet across the hardwood, but in miles of broken trust. She slowly lowered her hands, letting them rest at her sides.
""You think I'm lying,"" Elena said quietly, her voice devoid of its earlier frantic edge, replaced by a hollow, defeated numbness. ""You think I pushed her into labor over a false accusation.""
Marcus looked up at his wife. The harsh overhead light caught the fine lines of strain around his eyes. ""I didn't say that, Elena.""
""You didn't have to,"" she whispered, shaking her head. ""Your eyes said it the moment you walked through that door.""
Before Marcus could answer, the heavy pounding of boots on the front porch signaled the arrival of the paramedics. The front door, already damaged from Marcus’s explosive entry, swung wider as two emergency medical technicians rushed into the hallway with heavy trauma kits and a collapsible gurney. The sterile smell of medical antiseptic instantly replaced the metallic scent of blood.

""Clear the area! What have we got?"" the lead paramedic, a weathered man with calm, authoritative eyes, demanded as he dropped to his knees beside Clara.
Marcus immediately stepped back, yielding his space to the professionals. He stood up, his legs feeling stiff and heavy. He caught Elena’s gaze across the chaos of medical equipment and flashing red lights bleeding through the windows. The unspoken chasm between them had just grown wider, and the truth of what happened in this house was only beginning to unravel.
