Chapter 10: The Parking Garage Pursuit

The concrete parking structure was a cavern of deep shadows and echoing sounds. Fluorescent overhead lights buzzed intermittently, casting an eerie, flickering glow over rows of parked sedans and SUVs. Marcus jogged down the sweeping ramp from the ground level to the subterranean parking tier, his heavy breath frosting slightly in the cool night air.

""Police! Stop right there!"" Marcus shouted into the gloom, his voice bouncing off the concrete walls.

Ahead of him, a dark figure in a heavy hooded sweatshirt slipped behind a concrete support pillar, moving with swift, practiced agility. The man wasn't running in blind panic; he was moving with the cool confidence of someone who knew the layout of the structure.

Marcus pushed his pace, his legs burning as he closed the distance. He rounded the concrete pillar just as the figure darted toward the stairwell door leading out to the alleyway. Marcus lunged forward, extending a long arm, and managed to grab the trailing fabric of the hoodie.

The suspect spun around with surprising viciousness, driving a heavy elbow directly into Marcus’s chest. The impact knocked the wind out of Marcus, sending him stumbling back against a parked vehicle with a dull thud of sheet metal.

The man—young, sharp-featured, with cold, dead eyes—pulled a heavy, metallic pipe from the inside of his jacket, raising it with a threatening grin. ""Back off, cop. You don't know who you're messing with. That girl signed the contract in blood. We collect, or someone pays the price.""

Marcus fought through the burning pain in his ribs, squaring his stance. Years of hand-to-hand combat training at the academy kicked in. He didn't blink, his blue eyes locking onto the suspect's weapon. ""You picked the wrong family to extort,"" Marcus growled, stepping forward with deceptive speed.

As the suspect swung the pipe in a horizontal arc aimed at Marcus’s head, Marcus ducked underneath the blow, driving his shoulder directly into the man’s midsection. The impact sent both of them crashing hard onto the cold concrete floor.

The metal pipe clattered away, spinning across the oil-stained pavement. Marcus pinned the suspect instantly, driving a heavy knee into his back and pressing his forearm against the man's neck with calculated, restrained pressure.

""Don't move! You're under arrest,"" Marcus commanded, his voice vibrating with suppressed fury.

The suspect choked out a laugh against the concrete. ""You think... you think I’m the only one? Check your phone, cop.""

Marcus’s blood ran cold. He pulled his phone from his pocket with one hand while maintaining the pin with the other, glancing down at the screen. A new text message had just arrived from an unknown number. It was a photo—taken through the reinforced glass window of the NICU, showing the baby’s incubator with a gloved hand resting menacingly against the glass.

The realization hit Marcus like a tidal wave: this suspect was a decoy.
