Chapter 2: Shifting Priorities

The harsh reality of the medical emergency sliced through the emotional tension in the hallway. Marcus exhaled a sharp, trembling breath, forcing the confusion to the back of his mind. Protocol, instinct, and raw survival took over his training. He dropped to his knees beside Clara, ignoring the dark crimson smudging the knees of his navy uniform.
""Clara, look at me,"" Marcus commanded, his voice dropping an octave, steadying despite the internal panic clawing at his chest. He pressed two fingers against her wrist, finding a rapid, thready pulse. ""Talk to me. Where is the pain?""
Clara squeezed her eyes shut, a soft, pathetic whimper escaping her lips. Her fingers clawed blindly at the hardwood floor, slipping slightly in her own blood. ""It’s too early... Marcus, it’s coming too fast. She wouldn't let me leave. She found the box.""
Across the hall, Elena flinched as if struck physically. Still pressed against the white wainscoting, her dark wavy hair fell wildly across her face. ""I found your life savings in her bag, Marcus!"" Elena shouted defensively, her voice pitching upward into desperation. ""She was cleaning out the safe while you were at the precinct! I tried to stop her from walking out the door, and that’s when—that’s when she collapsed!""
Marcus didn't look up. His eyes darted around the immediate area, spotting his dropped radio on the hall table. He stretched out an arm, grabbed the device, and keyed the mic with a thumb that refused to stop shaking. ""Dispatch, this is Vance. I need an active medical unit at my residence immediately. Uncontrolled hemorrhaging, premature labor onset. Expedite.""
""Copy, Vance. Unit en route, ETA four minutes,"" the dispatcher's voice crackled through the small speaker, tinny and detached from the swirling vortex inside the house.
Clara arched her back slightly, crying out in a sharp, agonized tone that pierced the quiet morning. The pool of blood beside her seemed to expand, soaking into the intricate grain of the wood. Elena took a hesitant step forward, her protective stance warring with an innate human empathy that even anger couldn't completely extinguish.
""Do you want me to grab towels?"" Elena asked, her voice softening just a fraction, though her eyes remained wary.

Marcus snapped his head around, his blue eyes flashing with a dangerous mix of fury and helplessness. ""Stay back, Elena. Don't touch her.""
The words cut deep, hanging in the air between them like a physical barrier. Elena swallowed hard, the purple silk of her shirt rustling as she crossed her arms tightly over her chest. The accusation of theft hung heavily over Clara, yet the undeniable horror of a medical catastrophe played out in real-time on the floor. Marcus turned back to Clara, shedding his heavy utility belt to give her more room, his hands hovering uncertainly over her trembling form. He had faced armed suspects and volatile crime scenes, but nothing in his years on the force prepared him to deliver emergency care to his own family while a silent accusation tore his marriage apart.
