Chapter 8: The Strategy Meeting

By late afternoon, the rain had begun to fall, drumming a steady, relentless rhythm against the tall glass windows of the municipal library. Clara sat at a corner table with Ms. Vance and Leo, who had snuck out of school early to avoid being tracked by Marcus’s friends. The laptop between them displayed the exact agenda for the Oakridge School Board’s public session scheduled for 7:00 PM that evening.

"The public comment period is strictly limited to three minutes per speaker," Ms. Vance explained, pointing a slender finger at the screen. "When your name is called, you’ll step up to the podium, state your name for the record, and plug your flash drive into the board’s media console. They won't be able to cut your microphone without looking completely corrupt in front of the local press."

Leo looked up from the table, nervously twisting the zipper of his black hoodie. "The local press? Is the reporter from the County Gazette going to be there?"

"I called him myself," Ms. Vance said with a reassuring smile. "Mr. Harrison has been trying to look into the district’s booster club funding irregularities for months. An administrative cover-up involving student intimidation and falsified disciplinary reports is right in his wheelhouse."

Clara felt a cold knot of anxiety in her stomach, but it was matched by a profound sense of resolve. She looked down at her hands, remembering the way Mrs. Gable had dismissed her as "nothing" and the way Marcus had promised to make her life a living hell. Those words no longer held any power over her. They were the desperate threats of people who knew their little kingdom was built on sand.

"What happens after we play the video?" Clara asked quietly, looking between her two unlikely allies. "Marcus’s family is powerful. Mrs. Gable has tenure. Can they really be fired over this?"

"Fired?" Ms. Vance said firmly. "If that video hits the public record, it opens the district up to severe legal liability for civil rights violations and institutional negligence. The superintendent will have no choice but to suspend Mrs. Gable immediately pending an independent investigation. And Marcus... well, the athletic board has strict zero-tolerance policies for targeted harassment and falsification of evidence."

Leo offered a small, nervous grin. "And if they try anything tomorrow at school, the whole town will already know what kind of operation they're running."

Clara nodded slowly. The pieces were all in place. All that remained was to step into that brightly lit board room, face the stares of the adults who had looked the other way for years, and let the truth speak for itself. The intimidation was over. The reckoning had finally arrived.
