Chapter 5: The Digital Proof

Leo glanced nervously over his shoulder toward the main school building, ensuring no one else was watching them near the athletic sheds. His hands trembled as he pulled a small black flash drive from the front pocket of his hoodie and held it out toward Clara as if it were a live wire.

"I shouldn't even be talking to you about this," Leo whispered, his voice cracking slightly with adolescent panic. "If Mr. Harrison or Mrs. Gable finds out I accessed the admin server logs, they’ll expel me before the end of the semester."

Clara stared at the tiny piece of plastic resting in his palm. "Is it really on there?" she asked, her voice barely audible over the distant hum of traffic on the nearby highway. "The hallway camera feed from fourth period?"

"And the audio," Leo nodded rapidly. "The camera in that wing records high-definition video and directional sound. Mrs. Gable logged into the security portal at 1:15 PM yesterday and flagged the file for permanent deletion under the classification of 'routine maintenance.' But the system keeps an automated shadow backup for forty-eight hours before it purges forever. I pulled it onto this drive right before lunch."

Clara reached out and took the flash drive, her fingers brushing against Leo’s cold skin. The weight of the tiny object felt immense, carrying the power to upend the delicate, corrupt balance of power at Oakridge High. "Why are you doing this, Leo? You could get seriously hurt by this crowd."

Leo swallowed hard, looking down at his worn sneakers. "Because I saw what Marcus did to the kid before you, last year. Everyone stayed silent, and that kid transferred out by winter break. I’m tired of watching people get crushed just because their parents don't donate to the booster club."

Before Clara could reply, a sudden sharp whistle echoed across the turf from the direction of the gymnasium doors. Both of them froze. About fifty yards away, standing near the edge of the parking lot, Tyler and two other varsity players were walking toward the field, their eyes locked directly on the bleachers.

"Go!" Leo hissed, backing away into the shadows beneath the stadium structure. "Run through the tree line toward the front entrance. Don't let them catch you!"

Clara didn't hesitate. She clenched the flash drive tightly in her fist, shoved it deep into her jacket pocket, and bolted away from the bleachers. She sprinted across the damp grass, ignoring the burning in her lungs, diving into the thick cluster of pine trees bordering the property line. Behind her, she heard Tyler shouting curses, his footsteps pounding against the gravel path. She didn't look back until she reached the safety of the public sidewalk outside the school gates. She had the evidence now, but she was entirely hunted.
