Chapter 5

Thomas Vance sat in the dimly lit study of his waterfront manor, the rhythmic tick of an antique grandfather clock marking the slow passage of evening. Despite his retirement from active corporate management, his mind remained as sharp as a razor. Spread out across the heavy mahogany desk were confidential dossiers, financial audit reports, and transcripts of closed-door municipal hearings detailing the Sterling family's decades-long accumulation of political influence and hidden wealth. He had spent months compiling these documents, waiting for the right moment to ensure his daughter’s security in a world governed by ruthless ambition.

A private terminal on the corner of his desk flashed a silent amber alert—a direct mirror feed from the secure transmission channel Marcus was currently utilizing. Thomas leaned forward, adjusting his reading glasses as the audio stream synthesized the muffled sounds of Clara’s distressed breathing and Marcus’s low, tactical confirmations. A cold, heavy knot formed in the pit of his stomach. He had warned Clara against marrying into the Sterling family, recognizing Julian’s polished charm as a mask for profound emptiness and Eleanor’s refined elegance as a facade for aristocratic cruelty.

Thomas picked up a secure landline handset, bypassing public cellular networks entirely. He dialed a direct extension that connected to a trusted federal judge who owed him an immense professional debt. When the call was answered on the second ring, Thomas’s voice was devoid of emotion, carrying the weight of absolute authority.

"Judge Harrison, this is Thomas Vance," he said, staring at a framed photograph of Clara smiling on her wedding day. "I need an emergency writ of protection and a preservation order for the Sterling estate executed immediately. Grounds: unlawful confinement and endangerment of a vulnerable citizen."

On the other end of the line, Judge Harrison hesitated, recognizing the profound implications of moving against one of the most powerful political dynasties in the state. "Thomas, you understand what initiating this without a formal police report entails. If the press gets wind of an unverified raid on the Sterling residence before an official inquiry—"

"Let them," Thomas interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, cold and absolute. "Julian Sterling believes he is above the law because he hides behind his mother’s velvet curtains. Ensure the federal marshals are dispatched to the north gate within twenty minutes. If my daughter or my grandchild comes to harm, every ledger I possess goes public before dawn."
