Chapter 3

Inside the bright, sterile expanse of the kitchen, Clara dragged herself across the cold marble tiles, her green dress catching on the ornate brass hardware of the lower cabinets. The pain in her lower back flared with agonizing intensity, forcing her to pause and bite her lower lip until a metallic taste filled her mouth. She refused to scream; crying out would only grant them the satisfaction of her helplessness. With a final, desperate heave, she managed to hook her fingers around the base of the heavy kitchen stool, using it to haul herself upward into a kneeling position against the counter.

The speakerphone remained dark, its small LED indicator glowing a steady, mocking amber. Clara reached out, her fingers slick with cold sweat, and tapped the prominent silver activation button. A soft beep confirmed the line was active. The automated switchboard hummed quietly, awaiting an internal extension code. She did not know Julian’s private passcode, but she remembered the master override sequence her father had once mentioned in passing—a legacy code from a corporate merger involving the very telecommunications firm that wired the estate.

With trembling precision, Clara punched in the seven-digit sequence. For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened except the monotonous buzz of an open circuit. Then, a sharp click echoed through the speaker. A gruff, distinctly familiar voice answered on the other end, bypassing the estate's internal routing entirely. It was Marcus Vance, her father’s longtime chief of security and confidant. He had been monitoring Thomas Vance’s estate just across town, acting on a standing order to check in whenever Clara’s calls exhibited unusual timing.

"Vance security. State your identifier," Marcus commanded, his tone instantly shifting from professional courtesy to razor-sharp alertness upon hearing the heavy, labored breathing on the line.

Clara pressed her mouth close to the perforated speaker grill, her voice a breathless, urgent whisper. "Marcus… it’s Clara. Get to the north gate. They’re locking me out. Julian and his mother… they’re letting me labor alone. You need to come now."
