Chapter 2

Beyond the heavy barrier of the kitchen door, the muted sounds of polite dinner conversation drifted through the expansive hallway of the Sterling estate. Julian adjusted his cuffs, his expression devoid of remorse as he rejoined the gathering of influential judges, senators, and corporate executives in the formal dining room. Eleanor sat regally at the head of the mahogany table, her dark velvet dress absorbing the warm glow of the crystal chandelier. She raised a crystal glass of sparkling water to her lips, her hand entirely steady, betraying no sign of the domestic crisis unfolding mere yards away.

Julian slipped into his vacant seat beside a prominent senator from the judicial committee. The senator murmured approval regarding the upcoming confirmation hearings, praising Julian’s steadfast adherence to traditional values and institutional stability. Julian nodded politely, offering a measured, charming smile that masked the cold calculations running through his mind. He knew the risks of keeping Clara confined within the estate while she was in labor, but public scandal was the ultimate poison to a judicial career. Eleanor had assured him that discretion could be managed, that private medical professionals could be summoned under strict confidentiality once the political optics were secured.

Yet, a subtle unease prickled at the back of Julian’s neck. Clara was not easily broken. Despite her gentle demeanor and the quiet grace she had maintained throughout their three-year marriage, she possessed an inner resilience that terrified him. He remembered the fierce look in her eyes before he walked out of the kitchen—not fear, but determination. He glanced toward the arched entryway leading to the service wing, wondering if she had managed to crawl toward the wall-mounted intercom or the backup line.

Eleanor caught his distracted gaze from across the table. With a microscopic tilt of her head and a chillingly calm expression, she conveyed a silent command: maintain composure, finish the dinner, and let the machinery of their influence handle the rest. Julian forced his attention back to the senator, engaging in a deliberate discussion about municipal tax reform. But beneath the veneer of civilized luxury, the walls of their carefully constructed fortress were beginning to fracture, and the quiet countdown to their undoing had already begun.
