Chapter 9: Fractured Mirror

Clara stood frozen by the hospital room window, the afternoon sun casting long, pale beams across the linoleum floor. Her hands hovered awkwardly in the air before slowly dropping back to her sides. She looked smaller somehow, stripped of the manic energy and cold detachment that had governed her behavior during the height of her illness.
""Liam,"" she whispered, her voice cracking painfully on the single syllable. She swallowed hard, struggling to form the words past the lump in her throat. ""I... I remember.""
Liam closed the distance between them slowly, giving her ample space to retreat if the emotional weight became too heavy. He stopped a few feet away, taking in the reality of her recovery. ""Dr. Vance said your memory is returning.""
""It's like waking up from a horrific nightmare, only to realize you were the monster inside it,"" Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper as fresh tears spilled over her lower lashes. She brought her hands up to cover her face, her shoulders shaking with restrained, agonizing sobs. ""I saw the pictures, Liam. I saw Lily's arm. I held that bat. God in heaven, I tried to...""
She couldn't finish the sentence, the horror of her own actions choking off the words. She dropped to her knees on the floor, curling into a tight ball against the base of the wall, surrendering completely to the overwhelming wave of self-loathing and grief.
Liam didn't hesitate this time. He dropped down beside her on the cold hospital floor, wrapping his arms around her shaking frame and pulling her tightly against his chest. It was the exact same posture he had used to protect Lily weeks ago, but now he was extending that same protective grace to the woman who had caused the wound.
""Shh, Clara, I've got you,"" Liam murmured against her hair, his own eyes burning with hot tears. ""You were sick. It wasn't you. The encephalitis hijacked your brain. The doctors proved it.""

""How can you hold me?"" Clara sobbed into his shoulder, her fingers clutching frantically at the fabric of his jacket. ""I almost killed our children. I was looking right at Lily, and I didn't even see my daughter. I saw an enemy. If you hadn't broken through that door... I can't live with that, Liam. I don't know how I can ever look at my children again.""
""You're going to live with it by getting better,"" Liam said fiercely, pulling back slightly to look directly into her tear-streaked face. ""You're going to go through every therapy session, every treatment, every hard conversation. We are going to rebuild this, brick by broken brick. But you have to forgive yourself for a sickness you couldn't control. That's the only way we move forward.""
