Chapter 10: The Threshold of Supervised Visits

The clinical visitation room at the county health center was designed to feel neutral and non-threatening, featuring pastel blue walls, a small round table with a box of Crayola crayons, and a single observation mirror mounted high on the wall. Liam stood by the door, adjusting the collar of his shirt, while Clara sat nervously at the table, her hands folded tightly in her lap. Today marked the first step toward family reunification—a strictly supervised, thirty-minute meeting between Clara and Lily, monitored by a licensed child psychologist named Dr. Martinez.
The heavy door clicked open, and Dr. Martinez entered, guiding Lily gently into the room. Lily looked hesitant, stopping a few feet inside the doorway. She wore her favorite pink cardigan and carried a small stuffed rabbit under her arm, clutching it like a shield. Her left arm was completely healed of the dark bruise, though the psychological scar remained etched in her careful, guarded posture.
Clara stood up slowly, her movements tentative and restrained. She didn't rush toward her daughter, remembering the explicit instructions given during her psychiatric prep sessions. ""Hello, Lily,"" Clara said softly, her voice barely rising above a whisper.
Lily looked up at her mother, her brown eyes scanning Clara’s face for any sign of the cold stranger who had towered over her weeks ago. She looked over at Liam, who offered a gentle, encouraging nod from the doorway, before looking back at her mother.
""Hi, Mommy,"" Lily replied, her voice small and hesitant.
""Can I... may I sit down across from you?"" Clara asked, gesturing toward the empty chair.
Lily nodded slowly and walked over, climbing into the chair and placing her stuffed rabbit on the table between them. Clara sat down carefully, her hands remaining visible on the tabletop at all times. The tension in the room was palpable, thick enough to suffocate, but neither adult rushed to fill the silence.
""I'm sorry, Lily,"" Clara said, her voice breaking as tears welled in her eyes. She kept her emotions strictly restrained, refusing to overwhelm her daughter with theatrical grief. ""I was very, very sick. My brain was broken, and I didn't know what I was doing. But that doesn't make it okay. I am so sorry I scared you.""
Lily reached out slowly, her fingers tracing the edge of the crayon box. She looked at her mother for a long, searching moment before speaking. ""Daddy told me your brain had a bad bug. Are the doctors fixing it?""
""Yes, sweetheart, they are,"" Clara replied, a fragile ray of hope crossing her face. ""Every single day.""

""Can you draw with me?"" Lily asked softly, sliding a blank sheet of paper across the table.
Clara smiled through her tears, picking up a blue crayon with a trembling hand. ""I would love to.""
