Chapter 7: Conversations in the Sunlight

The backyard of Sarah’s suburban home was quiet, save for the gentle rustle of oak leaves in the afternoon breeze and the rhythmic squeak of the wooden porch swing. Lily sat beside her father, her legs swinging slowly as she stared down at her left forearm. The dark purple and black discoloration had begun to fade into a sickly yellowish-green, though the emotional shadow it cast remained stubbornly intact. She wore a bright yellow t-shirt today, a stark contrast to the white sleeveless shirt she had worn on the day the world had turned upside down.

Liam wrapped a gentle arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side. He had spent the last two hours rehearsing this conversation in his head, terrified of saying the wrong word and causing permanent psychological damage.

""Lily, sweetie,"" Liam began softly, his voice trembling slightly. ""Can we talk about Mommy for a few minutes?""

Lily immediately stiffened, her small hands clenching into fists on her lap. She looked away, staring fixedly at the wooden fence at the edge of the lawn. ""Do we have to, Daddy? Is she coming back here?""

""No, she’s not coming back here right now,"" Liam assured her quickly, squeezing her shoulder to reassure her. ""She’s still at the hospital where the doctors are taking care of her. But I want to explain something to you about why she acted the way she did that day.""

Lily turned her head slowly, her large brown eyes reflecting a painful mixture of fear and lingering affection. ""She tried to hurt me, Daddy. She had the bat.""

""I know she did, and it was terrifying, and it was completely wrong,"" Liam said, his voice steadying as he looked directly into her eyes. ""You have every right to be scared and angry. But I want you to know something very important. Mommy was not herself. She had a terrible sickness inside her brain—a tiny, invisible illness that made her body fight against her own mind. It made her confused, and it made her think things that weren't real.""

""Like a bad flu?"" Lily asked quietly, grasping for a concept she understood.

""Sort of like a very bad flu, but in her head,"" Liam nodded, brushing a stray lock of brown hair from her forehead. ""It wasn't your fault, Lily. Not a single second of it was your fault. And it doesn't mean Mommy stopped loving you. It means her brain broke, and the doctors are working around the clock to fix it. But until we are one hundred percent sure she is safe and healthy, she won't live with us.""

Lily absorbed this information in silence for a long moment, the tension slowly draining from her small frame. She leaned her head against Liam’s shoulder, a single tear escaping her eye and rolling down her cheek. ""I miss her, Daddy. But I'm scared of her too.""

""It's okay to feel both things at the same time,"" Liam whispered, kissing the top of her head. ""So do I, sweetheart. So do I.""
