Chapter 8: Cracks in the Alliance

Inside the sterile glass-walled conference room of Sterling Enterprises, the atmosphere was thick with mounting panic. Thomas paced back and forth across the carpet, his phone pressed tightly to his ear, while Henderson frantically typed on a laptop and Margaret sat in her motorized chair, staring blankly out the window at the gray skyline. Sarah stood near the corner, nervously twisting a gold ring on her finger.

""What do you mean, the federal investigators are auditing the primary accounts?"" Thomas barked into the phone, his face red with fury. ""Get our lobbyists on the line! Tell them to lean on the district supervisor!""

The person on the other end gave a sharp, definitive refusal before hanging up with a click. Thomas lowered the phone slowly, his hand trembling slightly. He looked around the room at his inner circle, realizing with mounting horror that their ironclad grip on the city was slipping away piece by piece.

""Thomas,"" Sarah said, her voice unusually subdued. ""We need to talk about damage control. Henderson just received an unofficial tip from a contact at the federal courthouse. Clara didn't just file for temporary custody; she submitted a complete forensic audit of the estate mortgages. They found the forged signatures on your grandfather-in-law's trust documents.""

Margaret turned her wheelchair around slowly, her sharp gaze locking onto her grandson. ""I told you years ago that marrying a woman from outside our social circle was a risk. You should have kept her managed, Thomas. Instead, you let your arrogance blind you, and now she’s holding the keys to our entire empire.""

""My arrogance?"" Thomas snapped, turning on his grandmother with sudden fury. ""You were the one who told me to throw the boy out of the living room to 'teach him manners'! You instigated the entire confrontation!""

""Enough!"" Sarah shouted, stepping between them with a rare display of authority. ""Ararguing amongst ourselves isn't going to stop federal investigators from freezing our remaining corporate assets by tomorrow morning. We need a scapegoat.""

Henderson stopped typing, looking up slowly from his laptop. ""What kind of scapegoat?""

""The mortgage transfers,"" Sarah said quietly, her eyes narrowing as she calculated the angles. ""The primary signatures on the secondary loan documents were filed under corporate compliance. If we pin the unauthorized asset diversion on Henderson’s legal department for failing to verify document authenticity, we can buy ourselves six months of litigation leeway while we restructure our offshore accounts.""

Henderson’s face drained of all color. He jumped to his feet, knocking his chair backward onto the carpet. ""You want to throw me under the bus? I filed those documents strictly under your direct orders, Thomas! I have the email trails and recorded phone transcripts saved on an encrypted drive at my home!""

The room fell into an icy, stunned silence. Thomas stared at his attorney, realizing that his inner circle was no longer a united front of loyalists, but a cage of cornered predators ready to turn on each other to survive.
