Chapter 3: The Gathering Storm

Morning sunlight poured through the sheer curtains of the cottage kitchen, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Ethan sat at the wooden table, happily munching on scrambled eggs and toast, the dark bruise on his cheek standing out sharply against his morning glow. Children possess an incredible resilience; already, the terror of the previous night seemed to be fading into the background, replaced by the simple comfort of being adored and protected. Clara watched him from the counter, sipping black coffee, her mind racing with the logistics of the battle ahead.
A sharp knock at the front door broke the morning quiet. Clara placed her mug down and walked quickly to the entryway, peering through the peephole. Marcus stood on the porch, wearing a rumpled trench coat over a business suit, his silver-streaked hair slightly disheveled. She unlocked the door and pulled it open, welcoming her oldest friend and former law school colleague into the house. Marcus stepped inside, carrying a large leather briefcase and smelling faintly of stale coffee and autumn rain.
""Good morning, Ethan,"" Marcus said with a warm, gentle smile as he caught sight of the boy in the kitchen. Ethan waved a piece of toast in greeting before returning his attention to his breakfast. Marcus turned his gaze to Clara, his expression instantly shifting from friendly to analytical. ""You look like you haven't slept, Clara. But your eyes have that look. The look you used to get when you cornered opposing counsel in mock trial.""
""I haven't slept, and I'm never going back, Marcus,"" Clara said quietly, leading him toward the dining table where the black suitcase lay open, its contents neatly categorized. ""Look at these corporate filings from the last four fiscal quarters. Thomas didn't just move money around; he systematically drained the trust funds left by my grandfather to bail out his failing real estate ventures in the downtown district.""
Marcus adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, pulling a pair of reading specs from his coat pocket. He sat down at the table, picking up the documents with practiced efficiency. For twenty minutes, the room was silent except for the scratch of paper and the distant hum of the refrigerator. Marcus’s eyebrows slowly climbed higher up his forehead as he absorbed the financial labyrinth Thomas had constructed.
""This is embezzlement, plain and simple,"" Marcus murmured, tracing a signature line with his index finger. ""He used your personal inheritance as collateral for speculative commercial loans without your informed consent. If we file an emergency injunction based on financial fraud and domestic displacement, we can freeze every single corporate and personal account they control within forty-eight hours.""
""What about the mansion?"" Clara asked. ""They think they own it because Thomas's name was added to the utility bills, but the original deed is right here, registered exclusively in my name before our marriage.""
Marcus smiled faintly, a spark of grim satisfaction lighting up his tired eyes. ""Then we don't just evict them from their comfort zone; we take back the very roof over their heads. But we have to move fast. Once Thomas realizes you've taken this suitcase, he’s going to use every dirty trick in the book to claim you abandoned the marital property voluntarily.""

""Let him try,"" Clara said, her voice hardening with resolve. ""The security cameras in that hallway recorded the whole thing. Every cruel word, every threat, and every push. They recorded it all.""
