Chapter 6: Shadows at the Cottage

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and orange as Clara unlocked the front door of her childhood cottage. She flicked on the hallway light, stepping inside with a cardboard box filled with legal transcripts and photocopied bank statements. Ethan was fast asleep in the back seat of the car, completely exhausted from a long day of playing at the park with the babysitter while Clara fought for his future in court. Walking back out to the vehicle, she unbuckled her sleeping son, cradling his light brown hair against her shoulder as she carried him inside to his bed.
After tucking him in and kissing his bruised cheek—now fading into a faint yellowish hue—Clara walked back to the kitchen to make a cup of chamomile tea. The day’s courtroom victory felt sweet, but the nagging intuition that Thomas would not take defeat lying down kept her nerves on high alert. He was a man accustomed to total control; backing him into a corner was dangerous.
Suddenly, a sharp crunch of gravel echoed from outside the cottage.
Clara froze, her mug hovering an inch above the counter. She extinguished the kitchen light with a quick click, plunging the room into darkness save for the pale moonlight filtering through the windowpanes. Creeping silently toward the front window, she parted the sheer curtains by a single millimeter and peered out into the driveway.
A sleek black sedan was parked idling near the edge of the property, its headlights turned off. The driver's door opened, and a tall, heavy-set man in a dark hoodie stepped out, scanning the perimeter of the house with slow, deliberate movements. He wasn't wearing a business suit; he moved with the practiced stealth of a private investigator or, worse, someone hired to intimidate.
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs, but training herself not to panic, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell phone. Without turning on the screen light, she dialed Marcus’s direct number on speed dial. It rang twice before the deep, calm voice answered. ""Clara? Everything okay?""
""There's a car parked outside my driveway,"" Clara whispered into the phone, keeping her eyes glued to the dark figure pacing near the porch steps. ""A man is walking around the perimeter of the house. He's checking the locks.""
""Don't turn on any lights, stay away from the windows, and call the local sheriff's department right now,"" Marcus instructed instantly, his tone shifting into sharp command mode. ""I'm dispatching a private security detail to your location, but they're twenty minutes out. Call 911 immediately.""
""I'm on it,"" Clara whispered, disconnecting the call.
She dialed emergency services, whispering her address and the description of the prowler to the dispatcher while keeping one eye on the front door. Just as the dispatcher confirmed that a patrol unit had been dispatched, a heavy thud echoed against the wooden front door, followed by the metallic jiggle of the doorknob. The lock held firm, but the intrusion attempt sent a cold shiver down Clara’s spine. Thomas wasn't waiting for the legal process to play out; he was testing her defenses.

Outside, the man muttered something under his breath before heavy footsteps crunched back down the gravel path toward the idling sedan. A moment later, tires squealed as the car accelerated down the dark suburban street, disappearing into the night.
Clara stood motionless in the dark kitchen for several long minutes, her breathing regulated and deep. The fear she had felt in the luxury mansion just days ago was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, hardened resolve. They could send investigators, they could intimidate, and they could threaten, but she was standing on her own ground now. And she was never going to back down.
