Chapter 8

The morning sun struggled to pierce through the thick, grey clouds gathering over the eastern horizon. Inside the study, the heavy mahogany desk was buried under stacks of financial audits, legal briefs, and the historical vellum maps recovered from the basement. Julian stood by the tall arched window, holding a cold cup of coffee, watching the perimeter gates where Detective Miller’s unmarked cruiser was parked.

The front door chimed again—not the polite, steady ring of a visitor, but a rapid, frantic buzzing that sent a jolt of adrenaline through the house. Mrs. Gable hurried down the hall from the kitchen, her face pale with alarm. Before she could reach the heavy oak door, the brass handle turned violently, and the door swung open.

Standing on the threshold was not a police officer, but a sharply dressed man in an expensive charcoal suit, accompanied by two stern-faced individuals carrying heavy leather briefcases. It was Arthur Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Vance Legal Counsel, and Julian’s primary corporate attorney.

"Julian," Arthur said without preamble, marching past Mrs. Gable and striding directly into the foyer. "Thank God you’re here. We’ve locked down the servers at corporate headquarters, but you have a catastrophic situation on your hands."

Julian turned away from the window and walked out to meet his lawyer, his jaw set. "What kind of catastrophic situation, Arthur? Speak plainly."

Arthur unzipped his briefcase and pulled out a thick sheaf of legal documents stamped with urgent red headers. He slapped the papers down onto the mahogany console table in the foyer.

"Your wife didn't just amend the asset-sharing rider in Zurich eighteen months ago," Arthur said, his voice breathless with urgency. "She executed a complete corporate restructuring of Vance Global’s subsidiary holdings while you were in transit. She used a power of attorney clause buried deep within the merger agreements—a clause you signed under the assumption it was standard liability insurance."

Julian stared at the red-stamped papers, the cold reality of his oversight washing over him. "What does she control?"

"Everything outside the core domestic accounts," Arthur said grimly. "She owns the intellectual property rights to your primary software patents, the European distribution channels, and—most critically—the title deeds to the land this estate sits on."

Julian felt the ground drop out from beneath him. "The estate is in her name?"

"Solely and irrevocably," Arthur nodded, adjusting his glasses. "If she files for divorce under the terms of the amended rider, she doesn't just get half. She gets everything. She can evict you, she can freeze your operational capital, and under the emergency guardianship clauses she slipped into the family trust, she can petition the family court for sole custody of Isabella based on what she will undoubtedly frame as an unstable domestic environment."

Julian clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned white. The garden incident yesterday wasn't just a sadistic display of discipline; it was a deliberate trap designed to provoke him into a furious reaction, giving her the ammunition she needed to paint him as unhinged to the authorities and the family court.

"Where is she right now?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.

"She isn't in the east wing, Mr. Vance," a voice called out sharply from the top of the grand staircase.

Julian and Arthur snapped their heads upward. Elena stood on the upper landing, draped not in her white silk robe or her utility jacket, but in a tailored black designer suit that mirrored Julian’s professional attire. She looked down at them with an expression of absolute, unassailable triumph, holding a heavy manila folder in her left hand.

"Looking for me, darling?" Elena asked, her voice carrying clearly across the marble foyer. "You really should invest in better locks. That Prohibition tunnel leads straight out to the guest cottage, and my car was waiting in the drive twenty minutes before your precious detective arrived."
