Chapter 4

Elena let out a short, dry laugh that sounded entirely out of place in the sterile, high-tech security room. She didn't move an inch toward the door, instead taking a slow, deliberate step closer to Julian, her eyes flashing with a sudden, dangerous confidence.
"Leave?" Elena repeated, her voice dripping with condescension. "Julian, darling, let’s be entirely realistic about your situation here. You think you can just banish me like an unwanted employee because I pushed your delicate little daughter to do some yard work? Check your financials, Julian. Look at who holds the controlling shares of Vance Global’s European assets. Look at whose name is on the deed to this estate."
Julian stared at her, a cold dread pooling in his stomach. When they had married three years ago, he had been captivated by her sharp intellect and sophisticated poise. In a gesture of supreme trust—and perhaps foolish romanticism—he had intertwined their business portfolios and legal holdings during their second year of marriage, believing it to be a testament to their unbreakable union.
"The prenuptial agreement protects my core holdings," Julian countered, though the immediate conviction in his voice wavered slightly as he realized the full scope of what she was implying.
"That antiquated document was amended eighteen months ago," Elena purred, stepping close enough for Julian to catch the sharp, expensive scent of her perfume. "You signed the updated asset-sharing rider during your merger negotiations in Zurich. You were jet-lagged, exhausted, and trusting. You signed whatever my legal team placed in front of you without reading the fine print. If I leave this house, Julian, I don't leave empty-handed. I take half of everything you've built, including the primary custody rights stipulated in our mutual guardianship addendum."
The room seemed to tilt slightly on its axis. Julian looked back at the computer monitors, where Isabella’s terrified face was still frozen on the paused video feed. The trap had been laid long before today; the garden incident wasn't an isolated outburst of cruelty, but rather a calculated pressure test designed to see how much Julian would tolerate, or perhaps to force a confrontation on her terms.
"You planned this," Julian whispered, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity. "You wanted me to catch you. You want a divorce on your terms."
"I want control," Elena corrected smoothly, stepping back and smoothing down the front of her white silk robe with pristine fingers. "And I want an environment where my authority in this household is absolute. Isabella needs to learn her place, and you need to learn yours. Now, are we going to sit down like civilized adults and discuss how we handle this little family dispute, or are you going to keep making empty threats that will cost you your entire empire?"
Julian’s mind raced. The protective father in him screamed to throw her out onto the street regardless of the financial cost, but the seasoned businessman understood the catastrophic fallout of losing control of Vance Global. Thousands of employees relied on the firm’s stability. More importantly, if Elena held custody rights under the amended agreement, banishing her might only drive her underground with Isabella, placing his daughter in even greater peril.
"No," Julian said firmly, squaring his shoulders. "We are not going to negotiate."

Elena arched a single, perfectly shaped eyebrow. "And what does that mean?"
"It means," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as he fixed her with a hard, unyielding stare, "that I am calling my lawyers to audit every single document you ever placed in front of me. And until that audit is complete, you will remain confined to the east wing of this house. If you come within fifty feet of my daughter again, I will break every financial agreement we have, consequences be damned."
