Chapter 12

The midday sun broke decisively through the heavy cloud cover, casting a brilliant, uncompromising glare across the stone patio and the vibrant blue hydrangeas. The atmosphere inside the Vance estate had shifted from a suffocating pressure cooker to a strange, eerie vacuum.

Elena stood alone in the center of the grand foyer, holding the crisp, freshly signed quitclaim deed in her hands. Her eyes scanned the legal phrasing over and over again, searching for a hidden clause, a corporate trap, or a financial loophole. But there was none. Julian had executed a clean, unencumbered transfer of the entire estate and its historical liabilities directly to her legal name.

The front doors stood wide open. Down the sweeping driveway, Julian’s black sedan idle-rumbled with its engine running. Arthur Sterling sat in the front passenger seat, shaking his head in disbelief, while Mrs. Gable loaded a pair of worn canvas suitcases and several sketchpads into the trunk.

Julian walked out of the house one last time, holding Isabella securely by the hand. The little girl wore her pink dress and her dirt-stained garden gloves—not because she was forced to work, but because she refused to leave them behind. They walked down the stone pathway past the hydrangeas, stepping off the property line and onto the public sidewalk beyond the iron gates.

Elena walked out onto the stone patio, stopping at the exact threshold where Julian had first confronted her the day before. The wind caught the hem of her black designer suit, rustling the heavy papers in her grip.

"You think walking away makes you a martyr, Julian?" Elena called out, her voice echoing across the open courtyard, carrying a sharp edge of frustration that she could no longer mask. "You’re leaving with nothing! You’re abandoning the empire your father built!"
