Chapter 5: The Estate Manager’s Secret

The rain lashed against the tall arched windows of the Vance estate, turning the sprawling lawns into a blur of dark green and gray. Inside the grand living room—the very room where Elena had been forced to kneel just days prior—the atmosphere was thick with tension. Marcus Holloway sat in a stiff-backed armchair near the unlit fireplace, his hands folded neatly over his walking cane. His posture was rigid, but his eyes darted constantly toward the heavy oak doors, expecting Margaret to walk in at any second and restore order to his shrinking world.
Daniel stood by the piano, his hands resting on the polished wood keys without pressing them down. Elena sat across from Marcus on a velvet settee, holding a digital tablet displaying the encrypted email logs Sarah Lin had managed to retrieve from the estate’s private server.
"You processed the digital authorization keys, Marcus," Elena said, her tone devoid of anger, carrying only a heavy, sorrowful curiosity. "For five years, you signed off on the transfers while pretending to mentor Daniel. Why? My father treated you like a brother. How could you help her dismantle everything he built?"
Marcus swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing sharply against his stiff collar. He looked old suddenly, the thirty years of loyal servitude stripping away to reveal a man trapped between his own moral decay and the absolute terror of the woman who employed him.
"You don't understand the level of control she exerts over everyone around her," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking slightly. He lowered his gaze to the patterned carpet. "When your father passed away, he left specific instructions in a codicil to his will—instructions that favored independent distribution of the estate assets to you, Daniel. Margaret destroyed that document before the lawyers could file it. When I discovered what she had done, I tried to confront her."
Daniel pushed off the piano, walking slowly toward the old man. "And what did she do?"

"She ruined my brother," Marcus said, a tear finally escaping his eye and tracking down his wrinkled cheek. "His medical practice was subjected to a targeted federal audit. His hospital credentials were revoked overnight. She told me that if I didn't cooperate, if I didn't help her secure the holding company under her sole discretion, everyone I loved would spend the rest of their lives in financial ruin or prison. She owns this entire city’s legal and medical infrastructure, Daniel. You have no idea what she’s capable of."
Elena leaned forward, her expression softening with genuine empathy, even as the gravity of the confession sank in. "She made you an accomplice by destroying your family first. But hiding it now won't save you, Marcus. If you cooperate with the federal investigators, we can offer you protection under a whistleblower agreement. If you stay loyal to her, you will take the fall for corporate embezzlement alone."
