Chapter 9: The Trail of the Backpack

Following the ticket agent's precise directions, Arthur hurried down the carpeted concourse toward Gate 12, weaving past hurried business travelers and families dragging oversized luggage. The gate area was relatively quiet, its boarding rows mostly empty as the morning flights had already departed for regional destinations. Arthur scanned the area meticulously, his eyes dropping to the floor, searching for any discarded clue. Near a row of blue plastic seats, tucked neatly underneath a charging station, something small and familiar caught his eye.

He knelt down and reached out, his fingers brushing against a small, dusty object. It was the exact same toy robot that had fallen from their luggage cart during the chaos of yesterday's emergency. Except, this wasn't their toy robot; it was an identical model, but this one had a small purple star sticker affixed to its left foot. Arthur picked it up, turning it over in his hands with a mounting sense of realization. This was not a random coincidence. The girl hadn't just been a bystander passing through; somehow, her path had intersected with theirs long before the moment Ethan's heart stopped.

He stood up, clutching the plastic robot tightly in his palm, and turned to the gate attendant currently packing up her computer at the podium. ""Excuse me, do you remember a young girl with long dark hair, wearing a denim jacket and carrying a purple backpack, checking in at this gate yesterday morning?"" The attendant blinked, searching her memory. ""Oh, Maya? Yes, I remember her. She's a very smart little girl. She travels with her mother frequently on the regional commuter flights from the valley. They live out in Oakridge.""

Oakridge was a small suburban community nestled about forty miles outside the city limits, known for its quiet neighborhoods and community-focused residents. The pieces of the puzzle were finally clicking together, forming a clear picture that demanded action. Arthur thanked the attendant profusely, slipped the toy robot safely into his coat pocket, and walked briskly back toward the terminal exit. He didn't know the exact address in Oakridge, but he knew the name Maya, and he knew he had to find her to express a depth of gratitude that words alone could never adequately capture.
