Chapter 3: The Interruption of Order

Airport security guards arrived seconds behind the doctor, their heavy boots thudding against the floor as they forced the wall of curious travelers backward. ""Clear the area! Back up, everyone, give the medical team room to work!"" one of the guards commanded, holding his hand up to block an overly eager passenger with a smartphone. The bright lights of the terminal seemed to magnify the clinical harshness of the moment. The doctor pressed his stethoscope firmly against Ethan’s chest, listening intently for any sign of a heartbeat while checking the boy’s carotid pulse with two steady fingers.
The father knelt back down, his knees grinding against the unforgiving floor, though he felt no pain. His entire universe had shrunk to a radius of three feet. ""Is he... is he breathing?"" the father choked out, his hands gripping the lapels of his suit jacket as if trying to anchor himself to reality. The doctor did not answer immediately, his brow furrowed in deep concentration. He signaled for an oxygen mask from an emergency kit that an airline employee had just rushed over to deliver.
Nearby, the young girl in the denim jacket stood quietly near the tipped wheelchair, watching the proceedings with an analytical gaze that felt entirely too old for her face. She adjusted the strap of her purple backpack, her eyes tracing the metallic frame of the collapsed chair and the fallen toy robot resting a few inches away. She did not speak, nor did she seek praise or attention from the surrounding adults. She simply observed, her small chest rising and falling in steady, even rhythms, contrasting sharply with the ragged, desperate gasps of the frantic father.

""We have a faint pulse,"" the doctor announced firmly, expertly securing the oxygen mask over Ethan’s pale face. ""He's coming back, but we need to move him immediately. Where are the paramedics?"" As if on cue, the distant wail of sirens began to bleed into the terminal from the outside curb, signaling that the airport's emergency response team was arriving at the sliding glass doors. The father let out a broken, shuddering sob of sheer relief, burying his face in his hands as the immediate threat of permanent loss receded just an inch.
