Chapter 11: The Threshold of Grace

Clara Bennett opened the door halfway, wiping her hands on a clean kitchen towel, her expression a polite mixture of curiosity and caution as she looked at the well-dressed stranger standing on her porch. Before Arthur could introduce himself, a familiar voice echoed from the hallway behind her. ""Mom, who is it?"" Maya stepped into view, wearing her signature denim jacket, her dark hair falling loosely over her shoulders. Her dark eyes widened slightly with recognition as she looked past her mother and locked eyes with Arthur Vance.

Arthur felt a lump form instantly in his throat. He swallowed hard, struggling to find his voice. ""Hello,"" he managed to say, his voice thick with emotion. ""I... I hope I'm not intruding. My name is Arthur Vance."" Clara’s eyes sharpened instantly as the name registered in her mind, connecting the dots between the news reports she had vaguely heard and the man standing on her doorstep. ""You're Ethan's father,"" Clara said softly, her posture softening from guarded caution to deep empathy. ""Please, come inside. Is Ethan... is he okay?""

""He's doing wonderfully,"" Arthur answered quickly, stepping across the threshold into the bright, cozy entryway that smelled faintly of cinnamon and old books. ""He's recovering at St. Jude's. The doctors say he's going to make a full recovery, thanks entirely... thanks entirely to your daughter."" Maya stood quietly by the hallway table, her expression unchanged as she looked up at Arthur. She didn't boast or smile triumphantly; she simply observed him with the same steady, calm focus she had exhibited on the cold floor of Terminal 4.

Clara gestured toward the living room, inviting Arthur to sit on the floral-print sofa while she offered him a cup of coffee or water. Arthur declined the drink with a polite shake of his head, opting instead to reach into the deep pocket of his trench coat. He pulled out the small plastic toy robot with the purple star sticker on its foot, holding it out gently in the palm of his hand. ""I found this near Gate 12,"" Arthur said, looking directly at Maya. ""I believe it belongs to you. And I brought something else, too—a debt of gratitude that I will spend the rest of my life trying to repay.""
