Chapter 7

The rain beat a relentless tattoo against the broad leaves of the weeping willows as Julian and Grace sprinted down the sloping gravel path toward the lake. The mud sucked at Grace’s worn-out shoes, threatening to pull them from her feet, but she refused to slow down. Cradling the golden retriever securely against her chest with one arm, she used her other hand to steady herself against Julian’s broad back as they navigated the slippery descent.

The lake was a churning expanse of black water, white-capped waves crashing against the rotting wooden pilings of the old boathouse. The structure itself was little more than a weathered shack, lit only by a single flickering security light mounted above its rusted iron door.

Julian pulled a heavy brass key from his wet pocket, fumbling slightly with cold, stiff fingers before the lock gave way with a satisfying click. He threw the door open, ushering Grace and the puppy inside into a space smelling of old canvas, motor oil, and cedar wood.

“In here. Quickly,” Julian commanded, locking the door behind them and sliding a heavy wooden beam across the brackets.

Grace set the golden retriever down on a dry canvas tarp in the corner. The puppy immediately curled up, its small body shivering as it began to lick the mud from its paws. Grace collapsed onto a wooden stool nearby, her breathing ragged, her hands raw and trembling from the cold.

Julian walked over to a heavy oak workbench covered in dusty electrical equipment, ancient vacuum-tube radios, and tangled wires. He flipped several master switches on a metal control panel mounted to the wall. With a low, rhythmic hum, a row of amber vacuum tubes began to glow, casting a warm, flickering light across the cramped room.

“Will this work?” Grace asked quietly, wiping a stray lock of wet hair from her forehead.

“It has to,” Julian replied, connecting the encrypted hard drive to a heavy military-grade transceiver using a series of specialized adapters he pulled from a metal drawer. “This system bypasses all commercial internet service providers. It transmits via shortwave radio burst directly to a dedicated receiver in Washington. If the data packet goes through, it will trigger an automated federal audit within sixty seconds.”

A sudden, sharp pounding on the boathouse door made both of them jump.

“Julian!” Eleanor’s voice rang out over the sound of the wind and waves, sharp and distorted through the thick wood. “I know you’re in there. Open this door right now, or I swear to God, the girl will pay for every single file you’re trying to send.”
