Chapter 14

The sun began to dip toward the horizon, casting long, golden shadows across the rolling hills surrounding the estate. Inside the newly renovated main hall, the sound of classical piano music drifted softly through the open windows, played by a local music instructor who had joined the foundation’s outreach program.

Julian and Grace walked side by side down the gravel path leading toward the lake, where the old boathouse had been entirely restored into a quiet reading pavilion overlooking the water. The golden retriever bounded ahead, chasing falling autumn leaves before running back to check that they were still following.

“The federal prosecutor called this morning,” Julian said quietly, breaking the peaceful silence. “The trial won't even go to a jury. Eleanor’s defense counsel realized the digital trail is airtight. She’s agreed to a plea deal in exchange for cooperating with the investigation into her offshore network.”

Grace nodded slowly, watching the ripples on the lake surface. There was no sense of triumph or malice in her heart, only a profound sense of closure. “I hope she finds some peace, wherever she ends up. Being consumed by greed like that... it must be a terrible way to live.”

“You have a remarkably forgiving heart, Grace,” Julian said softly, stopping on the wooden dock and turning to face her. The gentle breeze ruffled his dark hair, and for the first time, there were no shadows in his eyes.

“Not forgiving,” Grace corrected gently, meeting his gaze with steady, clear eyes. “Just free. For the first time in my life, I know who I am, and I’m not afraid of the dark anymore.”

Julian reached out, his hand brushing gently against hers. The touch was warm, natural, and unhurried. “Neither am I, Grace. Neither am I.”

Behind them, the golden retriever let out a happy bark, trotting back onto the dock and sitting squarely between their feet, looking out over the shining water as the last rays of sunlight warmed the landscape. The nightmare of that stormy night felt a lifetime away, replaced by the quiet, enduring promise of a new dawn.
