Chapter 12

The rain had finally begun to slow to a gentle drizzle by the time the emergency vehicles cleared the winding driveway of the Vance estate. The massive white mansion stood silent and illuminated against the breaking dawn, its dark secrets finally laid bare under the harsh light of accountability.

Julian sat on the wide stone steps of the front portico, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket provided by the paramedics. His face was bruised and cut, but his eyes were clear, carrying a profound sense of peace he hadn't felt in years.

Grace walked up the steps slowly, the golden retriever trotting happily beside her on a makeshift leash made from a piece of clean twine. The puppy’s fur was dry now, fluffed up and golden, its tail wagging with exuberant energy.

Julian looked up, standing immediately as Grace approached. He stepped forward and gently draped a second wool blanket around her shoulders, pulling it close to keep out the morning chill.

“Are you alright?” Julian asked softly, his voice full of genuine concern.

“I am now,” Grace replied with a small, exhausted smile. “The paramedics checked me over. Just a few scrapes and a bruised knee. And the puppy... well, he seems to have adopted me.”

Julian looked down at the golden retriever, which sat patiently at Grace’s feet, looking up at him with those wide, soulful, trusting eyes. Julian chuckled softly, a warm, genuine sound that seemed to wash away the last remnants of the night’s nightmare.

“I think he chose his real family tonight,” Julian said, meeting Grace’s gaze. “And I think you both deserve a lot better than working as a maid in a house built on lies.”

“What happens now, Mr. Vance?” Grace asked, her voice carrying a quiet curiosity about the future.

“The federal investigators have taken over the estate,” Julian said, walking with her toward the edge of the portico where the sun was beginning to break through the gray clouds. “Eleanor is being transferred to a federal holding facility downtown. The corporate assets are frozen, but my personal foundation remains intact—and funded.”

He paused, turning to face her fully. “I want to set up a permanent trust for the children's hospital, funded by the recovery accounts. And I need someone trustworthy, intelligent, and fiercely brave to run it.”
