Chapter 8: The Threshold of Grief

The intake lobby of the medical examiner’s office smelled faintly of industrial cleanser and old paper. Behind a high glass partition, a middle-aged clerk with tired eyes and a stack of manila folders was tapping away at a keyboard, paying little attention to the door opening.

Evelyn led Leo directly to the window. She pulled her identification badge from her pocket and laid it flat on the counter, facing the clerk.

The clerk glanced down at the gold-embossed judicial seal, then looked up into Evelyn’s face. Recognition flashed in the woman's eyes, followed immediately by confusion and a touch of professional alarm. ""Judge Vance? Is everything alright, Your Honor? Can I help you with a docket issue?""

""I am not here in an official judicial capacity, Ms. Henderson,"" Evelyn said, her voice even, controlled, but carrying an unmistakable undertone of steel. ""I am here as a private citizen. More specifically, I am here as the mother of Clara Vance, whose remains were brought into this facility yesterday afternoon.""

The clerk’s fingers froze on the keyboard. The color drained slightly from her face as she connected the prominent judge’s name with the unclaimed file sitting on the corner of her desk. ""Oh. Oh, Your Honor... I had no idea. We received the intake report from the shelter, but the emergency contact listed was out of service, and we hadn't yet—""

""I know,"" Evelyn interrupted gently, cutting off the anticipated bureaucratic apologies. ""That is why I am here. This is my grandson, Leo Vance.""

The clerk looked down through the glass at the small boy standing beside Evelyn, holding his tattered teddy bear. Pity softened the clerk’s professional expression. ""I am so sorry for your loss. Both of you.""

""Thank you,"" Evelyn replied. ""I need to complete the identification process, sign the release forms, and make arrangements for her transfer to a private funeral home. I want it handled with all due expedience and dignity.""

""Of course, Judge Vance. Let me pull the file and get the supervisor down here right away.""

As the clerk hurried off into the back offices, Evelyn looked down at Leo. The boy was staring at the linoleum floor, his small shoulders hunched. She reached out and placed a warm hand on the back of his neck, feeling the tension radiating from his muscles.

""We're going to take care of your mom, Leo,"" she whispered. ""We're going to give her a proper resting place, right beside her grandparents. She won't be forgotten.""

Leo looked up, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dirt on his cheek, but he nodded. The isolation that had defined his young life was finally beginning to fracture.
