Chapter 13: Rebuilding the Foundation

The days following the funeral brought a strange, grounding routine into Evelyn’s cavernous home. The silence that had once felt like a sanctuary now felt empty, so she began filling it with the small, domestic details of raising an eight-year-old boy.
She enrolled Leo in a local private school just down the hill from her home, personally meeting with the headmaster to ensure a smooth transition and strict privacy regarding their family history. She bought him new clothes, fresh notebooks, and set up a small desk in his bedroom—though the worn teddy bear still occupied a place of honor right beside his pillow.
Evelyn formally submitted her request for early retirement to the state judicial commission. The announcement sent shockwaves through the legal community, sparking endless speculation in local newspapers and legal journals about why one of the state's most respected judges was stepping down at the height of her career. Rumors of health issues, political disputes, and burnout swirled through the courthouse corridors. But Evelyn ignored them all. She did not issue public press releases or grant interviews. Her focus had shifted entirely from the abstract dispensation of state justice to the concrete, daily rehabilitation of a wounded child and her own scarred soul.
In the afternoons, after school let out, Evelyn would pick Leo up in her sedan—a stark contrast to the official court vehicle she used to command. They would stop by a small neighborhood park, where Leo would kick a soccer ball around while Evelyn sat on a wooden bench, grading nothing more complex than a third-grade spelling worksheet or simply watching him run with the carefree energy that had been stolen from him for far too long.
One evening, as they sat together at the kitchen island eating a simple homemade dinner, Leo looked up from his plate with a serious expression.
""Grandma?"" he asked, using the title with increasing comfort and naturalness.
""Yes, Leo?"" Evelyn replied, setting down her fork.

""Do you think Mom is watching us?""
Evelyn smiled softly, reaching across the marble to squeeze his small hand. ""I know she is, Leo. And I think she's very proud of the home we're building together.""
