Chapter 15: The Unbroken Circle
The final bell of the school year rang out across the manicured campus, signaling the start of summer vacation. A stream of children poured out through the double doors, shouting and laughing as they ran toward waiting parents.
Evelyn stood near the front walkway, leaning against her sedan, wearing a simple linen dress and sunglasses. The harsh black judicial robes and the intimidating aura of the courtroom were now distant memories from another lifetime—a previous incarnation of a woman who had measured her worth in rulings and precedents rather than love and family.
A moment later, Leo spotted her. He broke away from a group of classmates, his backpack slung over one shoulder, and sprinted across the pavement with a bright, unfettered smile on his face. In his hand, he held the worn brown teddy bear, its missing eye and matted fur bearing witness to the journey they had traveled together.
""Grandma!"" Leo shouted, rushing up to her and throwing his arms around her waist.
Evelyn dropped to one knee, wrapping her arms securely around him, burying her face in his light brown hair. ""How was your last day of school, my boy?"" she asked, her voice rich with warmth and joy.
""It was great!"" Leo beamed, holding up a blue ribbon he had won in the end-of-year track meet. ""And I got an A in math!""

She stood up, taking his small hand in hers. Together, they walked toward the car, the afternoon sunlight casting long, golden shadows across the pavement. They did not look back at the past, nor did they worry about the uncertainties of the future. The circle was finally whole, mended by the enduring power of forgiveness, the resilience of a child's faith, and a mother's last, grace-filled wish. As the car door clicked shut and they drove off toward their home on the hill, the silence of the courtroom was replaced by the joyful, living sound of a family reunited at last.
