Chapter 7: Breaking the Seal

Julian took the blue envelope to his private study, locking the heavy oak door behind him. He sat at his desk, the desk lamp illuminating the dark wax seal bearing the raven emblem. Clara had chosen to wait outside the door with Mrs. Gable, a silent sentinel refusing to leave his vicinity. Julian slid his letter opener under the wax, breaking the seal with a sharp, echoing snap. Inside lay three tightly folded documents and a small flash drive made of brushed titanium.

He unfolded the papers first. They were financial audit reports, property deeds, and corporate transfer agreements dating back twelve years—all bearing the letterhead of Vance Global, his own conglomerate. Julian scanned the lines of data, his breath catching in his throat. The documents detailed a massive embezzlement scheme orchestrated within his own company's acquisition division, using offshore accounts to siphon millions of dollars from public infrastructure projects. And at the center of the signature block for the primary holding shell was the signature of Victor Thorne, Julian’s chief operating officer and closest corporate confidant.

Sarah had worked as an executive assistant in that exact division twelve years ago, right before they parted ways. She must have stumbled upon the financial records by accident, copying them onto a secure drive before fleeing to protect herself and the unborn child she already knew she was carrying. Victor Thorne had spent over a decade hunting for those documents to eliminate any liability that could tear down his criminal enterprise.

Julian leaned back in his leather chair, the magnitude of the revelation washing over him. The threat wasn't a random criminal; it was operating inside the very boardrooms where Julian conducted business every day. Victor Thorne was not just an employee; he was a trusted partner who dined at Julian's home and managed major strategic initiatives.

The intercom on his desk buzzed softly. Mrs. Gable's voice came through, tense and strained. "Mr. Julian, we have an unexpected visitor at the front gate. A black sedan. A man demanding to speak with you regarding a personal matter."

Julian’s eyes locked onto the titanium flash drive resting on the desk. The predator had arrived.
