Chapter 3: Unraveling the Past

An hour later, Julian sat in his expansive private study, the amber glow of the desk lamp casting long shadows across the leather-bound books. The heavy oak door was ajar, allowing him to hear the soft murmurs coming from down the hall where Mrs. Gable was tending to the girls. Julian held the silver locket in his palm, pressing the latch until it clicked open. Inside was a tiny photograph of a younger himself and Sarah, smiling on a boardwalk during a summer they had both pretended would last forever. They had parted ways under a cloud of ambition and unspoken expectations, Julian choosing the cold certainty of wealth and family legacy, while Sarah had chosen a path far away from the public eye.

A gentle knock interrupted his thoughts, and Mrs. Gable stepped into the room, closing the door softly behind her. Her expression was grave, etched with lines of profound worry.

"They are both asleep now, Mr. Julian," Mrs. Gable said softly, folding her hands in front of her apron. "The little one is resting peacefully in the yellow guest room, and Clara finally consented to eat a bowl of soup before lying down beside her sister. But you need to see what else was in the small canvas bag Clara brought with her."

Mrs. Gable placed a worn leather notebook on the mahogany desk. Julian stared at it, recognizing the distinct handwriting immediately. It was Sarah’s journal.

"Did you read it?" Julian asked, his voice strained.

"Only the first page," Mrs. Gable replied honestly. "She wrote it for you, Julian. Or rather, she wrote it so that the truth could never be buried, no matter how hard the world tried to hide it. She knew her time was short. She was running from something—or someone—before her health finally gave out."

Julian opened the journal. The pages fluttered slightly as he turned to the marked entries, his eyes scanning the neat, hurried script. Sarah detailed the years after their separation, the quiet struggles, and ultimately, the birth of Clara and Lily. But the final entries changed in tone, shifting from retrospective nostalgia to genuine fear. She mentioned a man who had been watching their apartment, asking questions about Julian Vance and demanding documents that Sarah claimed she never possessed. Julian felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. This was no longer just a family reunion complicated by the ghosts of the past; it was a potential threat that had now breached his doorstep.
