Chapter 10: Breach of Defense

As Julian reached the top of the stone steps, the heavy sound of snapping metal echoed through the courtyard. Victor’s operatives had cut through the secondary padlock of the wrought iron gates and were advancing up the driveway. Julian didn't run. He opened the massive mahogany doors and stepped inside, pulling the heavy bolts shut just as the first heavy thud struck the exterior wood.
He moved quickly through the foyer and entered the library, pressing the hidden sequence on the bookshelf panel to open the panic room. Clara and Lily stepped out into the room. Clara’s eyes were wide, scanning Julian’s face for any sign of panic, while the baby remained calm, chewing sleepily on the corner of a blanket.
"They're inside the courtyard," Julian said, his voice firm and reassuring. "We are going to move to the lower security vault through the basement corridor. Stay close to me, Clara."
Clara nodded, her small hand reaching out to grab the edge of Julian’s suit jacket with a grip that mirrored her mother’s tenacity. "I'm not scared," she whispered defiantly, though her lower lip trembled slightly.
"I know you aren't," Julian replied softly, feeling a rush of protective pride that caught him off guard.
They descended the narrow, stone stairs leading down to the basement archives. The mansion's advanced security grid was already flashing red lights across the interior walls, indicating that the perimeter alarm had been triggered and federal marshals had been automatically dispatched via his pre-set corporate defense protocol. Julian guided the girls into the reinforced panic shelter, securing the hydraulic steel door behind them.

Upstairs, the sound of splintering wood resonated through the floorboards. Victor Thorne and his men had breached the front doors and were systematically searching the main rooms of the mansion. Julian watched the security monitors embedded in the vault wall, tracking their movements as they tore through the study and living quarters. Victor looked furious on the screen, screaming instructions to his men to find the safe and rip the house apart.
Julian pulled the titanium flash drive from his pocket and inserted it into the vault’s secure terminal, confirming that the encrypted data package had successfully synchronized with the federal server network. The trap was locked, and there was nowhere left for Victor to run.
