Chapter 6

The heavy steel door of the vault alcove groaned as it was pushed open with deliberate force. Clara instinctively stepped back, pulling the leather folder against her chest while Julian smoothly positioned himself between her and the entrance. Stepping into the sterile light of the vault was a man in a tailored charcoal suit, his silver-streaked hair neatly combed, his face bearing the cold, calculating expression of a seasoned predator. It was Viktor. He didn't look like a ghost; he looked like a man who owned the very ground they stood on. A quiet, terrifying smile played at the corners of his mouth as he surveyed the scene.

"Julian, Clara," Viktor said, his voice smooth and cultured, carrying an eerie tone of polite hospitality. "I must hand it to you both. Finding this box took a bit of digging, but you two always were exceptionally thorough." Julian didn't flinch, his eyes locked onto Viktor's hands to track any sudden movements. "You're late, Viktor. I expected you back at the house before we even reached the highway," Julian replied, his voice chillingly steady. Viktor chuckled, stepping further into the confined space and effectively blocking their only exit from the alcove. "Traffic on the bridge was terrible. Besides, I wanted to give you the courtesy of gathering your little pieces of evidence together. It saves my team the trouble of searching for them."

Clara’s mind raced, calculating angles, escape routes, and the timing of the dead-man’s switch she had activated on her phone. She slowly slid her hand into the pocket of her trench coat, her thumb hovering over the screen. If she could just buy thirty seconds, the encrypted data packet would automatically transmit to every major news outlet and federal watchdog agency in the country. Viktor noticed the movement, his eyes flicking down to her coat pocket with mild amusement. "Ah, the digital insurance policy," Viktor murmured, taking another step forward. "Impressive engineering, Clara. But you forget who built the servers your little app is routing through. We own the cloud, my dear. Your dead-man’s switch went straight to a dead end three minutes ago."

A cold wave of despair washed over Clara. The digital failsafe was gone, neutralized before it could even begin its transmission. Julian sensed the shift in the room’s dynamic and lunged forward, using his physical mass to slam Viktor against the reinforced steel wall of the vault. The impact echoed loudly in the confined space, but Viktor didn't cry out. Instead, a grim smile remained on his face as he effortlessly countered Julian’s grip, twisting his arm behind his back with practiced brutality. Clara gasped, dropping the leather folder onto the steel examination table as she reached out to help her husband.

"Don't, Clara!" Julian grunted, wincing in pain as Viktor applied pressure to his shoulder joint. "Just take the flash drive from the folder and run! Don't let them have the decryption key!" Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting between Julian’s strained face and the open leather folder. On the table rested the small, unassuming black flash drive containing the ultimate truth about the agency’s corruption. Without thinking twice, she swept the flash drive off the steel surface, tucked it securely into her glove, and darted past Viktor’s flank toward the open vault door.

Viktor made a half-hearted attempt to grab her coat, but Julian slammed his heel down onto Viktor's instep, buying Clara the critical second she needed to break free. She hit the main corridor running, her boots pounding against the concrete floor as the alarms in the subterranean vault began to wail in a frantic, rising shriek. Behind her, the muffled sounds of a struggle faded as she rounded the corner toward the terminal elevators, knowing she was now entirely alone in a war against an invisible, all-powerful enemy.
