Chapter 13

The blaring red emergency strobe pulsed violently against the basement walls, casting erratic shadows across the room as the security klaxon shrieked overhead. Marcus flinched, pulling his hands away from the keyboard as panic overwhelmed his features. "They're here!" Marcus shouted, ducking beneath the heavy oak desk. "Viktor's team bypassed the street perimeter! They know you're in the building!" Clara looked at the central monitor; the upload progress bar stood at 82%. Just a few more seconds and the data packet would be locked permanently inside the federal oversight mainframe beyond anyone's reach.

Director Vance didn't hesitate. She pivoted toward the doorway, leveling her silenced pistol at the top of the wooden stairwell. "Julian, stay with Clara. Keep that upload moving," Vance ordered, her voice cutting cleanly through the screech of the alarm. "I'll hold the stairs as long as I can." Heavy boots slammed against the wooden steps above, followed immediately by the dull, suppressed crack of a silenced firearm. A bullet punched through the upper drywall, showering the hallway with a cloud of white plaster dust. Vance returned fire with disciplined, measured precision, two suppressed pops echoing in rapid succession before the sound of a falling body rolled down the upper steps.

"91%... 95%..." Clara chanted softly, her eyes locked onto the glowing progress bar on the screen as if her sheer willpower could force the data across the finish line faster. Down the hall, the sound of heavy scuffling and suppressed gunfire escalated. Julian grabbed a heavy steel filing cabinet from the corner of the room, shoving it across the doorway to create a makeshift barricade just as a second wave of operatives attempted to breach the lower landing. A hail of bullets chewed into the metal exterior of the filing cabinet, sending sparks flying across the concrete floor.

"99%... Upload Complete," the screen flashed in bold, triumphant green text. A secondary notification appeared: Data packet successfully routed to Congressional Oversight Committee and Federal Special Prosecutor. Clara let out a ragged breath, grabbing the flash drive out of the port and slipping it back into her pocket. They had done it. The shadow syndicate's entire architecture of corruption was now exposed to the highest levels of law enforcement. But celebration would have to wait; the room was filling with acrid gunsmoke, and the heavy thud of a tactical breaching charge being planted against the upper door sent a terrifying vibration through the floorboards.

"We need to move, now!" Julian yelled, grabbing Clara by the arm and pulling her toward the emergency utility tunnel hidden behind the server racks. Director Vance retreated backward into the room, her magazine empty, her shoulder grazing a shallow graze wound that leaked a dark line of blood down her utility jacket. "The utility tunnel leads out to the drainage culvert behind the block," Vance called out, covering their rear as Julian forced open the rusted metal maintenance hatch. Marcus cowered in the corner, paralyzed by fear, as the upper door blew inward with a deafening roar of splintering wood and smoke.
