Chapter 12

Julian signaled with two fingers, counting down silently before pushing the heavy oak door open with a sudden, forceful shove. The door slammed against the drywall with a sharp crack that shattered the quiet of the basement. Marcus spun around in his leather chair, his face pale with sudden shock as he reached instinctively for a holster clipped beneath his desk. Before his fingers could wrap around the grip of his weapon, Director Vance stepped into the room, her silenced pistol leveled squarely at the center of his chest. "Don't even think about it, Marcus," Vance said, her voice dropping to a glacial, authoritative register.

Marcus froze, his hands hovering inches from the desk, his eyes darting frantically between Vance, Julian, and Clara. A bead of nervous sweat dripped down his temple, catching the harsh blue glow of the computer monitors. "Julian... Clara?" Marcus stammered, attempting a disarming, nervous smile that failed completely. "What is this? What are you doing here? I thought you were—" "You thought we were dead," Clara interrupted, stepping forward until she stood right at the edge of his desk. Her voice was terrifyingly calm, devoid of anger, driven entirely by razor-sharp resolve. "You sold us out to Viktor, Marcus. And now, you're going to pay your tab."

Marcus swallowed hard, his eyes flicking toward the massive server rack humming quietly against the back wall. "I didn't have a choice," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "Viktor has my family. If I didn't flag your address, they would have—" "Save the sob story for a judge," Julian snapped, stepping up beside Clara and slamming his palm down onto the desk. "You put a target on our backs for a paycheck and self-preservation. Now put your hands on the keyboard and do exactly what we tell you." Clara pulled the tiny black flash drive from her pocket and dropped it onto the glass desk surface with a sharp tap.

"You are going to log into the internal federal oversight network using your master clearance credentials," Clara commanded, leaning in close so Marcus could see the absolute lack of mercy in her eyes. "You are going to initiate the master upload of this decryption file, and you are going to authorize it as a priority-one internal security transmission. If you try to trigger a silent alarm or route the signal to Viktor’s servers, Vance will put a bullet through your kneecap before you can blink." Marcus looked at Director Vance, saw the absolute stone-cold certainty in her expression, and realized his game was entirely over.

With shaking hands, Marcus reached out, grabbed the black flash drive, and plugged it into the dedicated mainframe port on his desk. The monitors flashed amber, then quickly shifted to a steady, pulsing green as the system recognized his biometric credentials and master clearance code. A progress bar appeared on the central screen, showing the massive file transferring into the congressional oversight database at gigabit speed. 15%... 30%... 45%... Clara watched the bar climb, her heart hammering against her ribs. They were so close. Suddenly, the security klaxon on the wall above the desk blared to life, flashing a harsh, blinding crimson light as an emergency override signal echoed from the main street entrance upstairs.
