Chapter 3: The Digital Archive

The soft chime of the home server booting up echoed softly in the private study down the hall. Julian sat behind the massive walnut desk, the glow of twin monitors illuminating the sharp angles of his face. Leo stood on a footstool beside him, using a wireless mouse to navigate through the high-definition footage archived by the comprehensive home security system. Elena sat across from them in a stiff leather armchair, guarded by Julian’s icy silence. She had refused to change out of her red satin robe, as if clinging to the remnants of her lost performance would somehow protect her from what was coming.
“Show me the morning of the supposed doctor’s appointment,” Julian instructed, his voice flat and robotic, drained of all human warmth.
Leo clicked through the timeline, pulling up footage from three weeks prior. The camera angle in the grand foyer was pristine, capturing every detail in crystal-clear four-kilohertz resolution. On the screen, Elena could be seen walking briskly toward the front door, wearing a heavy winter coat despite the mild spring weather. As she adjusted the padding around her midsection, the footage clearly showed her pulling a synthetic foam insert from a shopping bag she had smuggled in through the garage entrance the night before.
“You bought the prosthetic online,” Julian noted, stating a fact rather than asking a question. His eyes remained glued to the monitor, watching his wife carefully arrange the fake belly in front of the hallway mirror before practicing her pained, expectant walk. The sheer methodical nature of the preparation sickened him far more than a sudden, passionate betrayal would have. It was cold, calculated fraud.
“I had to,” Elena finally spoke, her voice raspy and defensive. She refused to cower completely, lifting her chin with a flicker of her old defiance. “You were pulling away, Julian. Your work, your board meetings, your coldness—you only looked at me when I talked about the future. I gave you the future you claimed you wanted so badly.”
“By trapping me in a legal trap that could have destroyed my entire career?” Julian snapped, slamming his palm flat against the mahogany desktop. The sound made Leo flinch, though the boy did not look away from the screen. “This isn’t about love, Elena. This is about fraud on an institutional level. When I submit these files to the board and corporate legal counsel, you won't just be out of this house—you’ll be facing federal wire fraud charges.”

Elena’s eyes widened slightly at the mention of federal charges, the gravity of her actions finally breaking through her psychological armor. She had anticipated a messy divorce, a bitter custody battle over assets, or perhaps a screaming match that ended in a costly settlement. She had never prepared for prison.
