Chapter 13

The freezing night air hit their lungs like a physical blow as they emerged from the stone drainage tunnel into the dense underbrush of the creek bed. The dark canopy of pine trees shielded them from the pale moonlight, casting jagged shadows across the damp earth. Clara was trembling violently, her thin hospital slippers ruined by the mud, yet she kept the infant securely bundled against her chest. Leo stayed close beside his father, his breathing steady and controlled despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins.
"We need to reach the main highway," David panted, scanning the dark treeline for any sign of pursuit. "There's an old service station three miles down the ridge. We can use a public phone to contact federal authorities directly—not local police, but the federal cybercrimes division whose secure routing codes we found in the ledger."
"Will they believe us, David?" Clara asked, her voice cracking with exhaustion as tears mixed with dirt on her cheeks. "Those men... they had military-grade gear. The people behind this have infinite resources."
"They have resources, but we have the evidence," David replied, pulling the crumpled ledger pages from his jacket pocket. "Leo cracked the encryption keys. The moment we connect those files to an unsecured federal network, an automated data-dump will broadcast the Vanguard's entire operational ledger to every major news outlet and federal agency in the country. They can't silence a digital footprint that's already broadcast to millions."
As if responding to his words, the distant rumble of a helicopter blade began to chop through the night sky above the tree line. A powerful searchlight cut through the darkness, sweeping across the forest canopy in wide, sweeping arcs, searching desperately for their thermal signatures among the pines.
"They've deployed air support," Leo said quietly, pointing up through the branches at the dark silhouette of the chopper circling overhead. "We have to move faster. The thermal camera will pick up our body heat if we stay in the open."
"Run!" David commanded, wrapping one arm around Clara's waist to help her navigate the rugged terrain as they sprinted toward the rocky ridge leading down to the highway.
The searchlight swept dangerously close, illuminating the trees just yards behind them with an eerie, daylight-bright glare. The roar of the helicopter blades deafened the quiet woods, pressing down on them with suffocating force. Clara stumbled over a exposed tree root, crying out softly as she hit the damp earth, but David hauled her back to her feet in a fraction of a second.
"Keep going! Don't look back!" David yelled over the deafening noise of the chopper above.

Ahead of them, through the break in the dense pine trees, the faint neon sign of the highway service station flickered against the dark horizon like a beacon of hope in an endless night.
