Chapter 11

The black SUV halted fifty yards from the cabin, its engine dying with a quiet, suppressed purr that vanished into the rustling pine trees. Inside the darkened living room, David held his breath, his hand gripping the hilt of the hunting knife while Leo crouched silently beneath the heavy oak dining table. The amber embers of the fireplace cast a faint, dying glow across the wooden floorboards. Through the slats of the window blinds, David watched two figures step out of the vehicle. They wore dark tactical jackets, their faces obscured by the shadows of the dense forest canopy, moving with the practiced, disciplined synchronization of professional operatives.
They weren't local police, and they certainly weren't hospital security. They belonged to the enforcement arm of the Vanguard society—the hidden hand Richard Miller had spent decades cultivating to protect his illicit network.
"They found us too fast," David thought, his mind racing through possibilities. The ledger pages he had taken must have contained an active GPS tracker embedded within the binding, a fail-safe device designed to lead the society straight to anyone attempting to steal their secrets.
One of the operatives walked toward the front porch, heavy boots crunching loudly on the frozen gravel. The other circled around toward the rear of the cabin, heading straight for the bedroom window where Clara and the baby were sleeping.
"Leo, stay here," David whispered fiercely, leaning down to meet his son's eyes in the dark. "Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear."
Before Leo could reply, David slipped silently through the interior hallway toward the back bedroom. The heavy oak front door of the cabin groaned as the first operative forced a heavy boot against the latch, splintering the frame and stepping into the living room with quiet menace.
David burst into the bedroom just as the second operative was slipping a gloved hand through the cracked windowpane. Without hesitation, David lunged forward, striking the intruder’s arm with the heavy brass handle of the bedroom door, sending the man stumbling backward onto the wooden deck outside.
"Clara! Wake up!" David shouted, rushing to the bed where Clara bolted upright, her eyes wide with sheer terror as the infant began to cry softly.
"What's happening?" Clara screamed, clutching the baby to her chest.
"They're here. We have to go through the root cellar now!" David yelled, lifting the heavy rug in the corner of the bedroom to reveal a weathered wooden trapdoor leading down into the dark earth beneath the cabin.

Heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway toward the bedroom as the front operative breached the inner door. David hauled the trapdoor open just as a flashlight beam sliced through the darkness of the bedroom, illuminating the panic on Clara's face.
