Chapter 9: The Executive Garage

The basement loading dock of the commercial bank offered a far better chance of escape than the pedestrian exits, but it came with its own set of dangers. Arthur knew that corporate facilities of this scale maintained a private fleet of secure transport vehicles for executives and high-value clients—vehicles equipped with encrypted GPS tracking, reinforced chassis, and, most importantly, mechanical keys rather than digital transponders that could be remotely disabled by Elena’s technical team.
He led Chloe down the narrow concrete maintenance stairs, keeping their footsteps light and silent against the rubber treads. The loading dock was vast, echoing, and illuminated by harsh overhead mercury vapor lamps that cast a greenish pallor over the concrete floor. Parked near the freight elevator was a row of three identical dark grey corporate sedans.
Arthur scanned the windshields, his eyes searching for the small plastic key-box racks mounted near the driver's side windows—a standard feature in corporate motor pools.
"Stay behind this pillar, Chloe," Arthur instructed, gently guiding her into the alcove of the freight elevator shaft.
"Be careful, Dad," she whispered, her hands gripping the hem of his coat.
Arthur stepped out into the open bay, crossing the cold concrete toward the middle sedan. The key-box was locked with a heavy combination padlock, but corporate security protocols in the late nineties had been notoriously uniform across the entire financial district. He spun the dials to his old office extension number, a habit born of decades in the same building. With a sharp, metallic click, the small metal door popped open, revealing a heavy brass master key resting on a velvet pad.
He snatched the key, sliding it into the sedan's door lock with trembling fingers. The lock turned smoothly, the heavy door swinging open with a muted pop.
Suddenly, the harsh lighting overhead flickered and died, plunging the entire loading dock into near-total darkness.
Arthur froze, his hand resting on the open car door. The heavy mechanical hum of the building's ventilation system cut out completely, replaced by an eerie, profound silence.
"Dad?" Chloe’s voice echoed softly from the elevator alcove, trembling with sudden terror.
Before Arthur could answer, the heavy steel security gate at the entrance of the loading dock began to rise with a slow, grinding shriek of rusted chains. Two sweeping beams of high-intensity white headlights cut through the gloom, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the damp air. A black van rolled slowly into the subterranean bay, its engine idling with a deep, menacing purr.

The driver’s side door opened, and the man in the black suit stepped out, his white-gloved hands catching the reflection of the headlights as he walked toward the center of the bay, blocking their only exit.
