Chapter 12: The Fork in the Tunnel

Arthur skidded to a halt, throwing his arm out to push Chloe behind him. The man in the drainage junction didn't draw a weapon; he simply stood there with his hands neatly folded in front of him, exactly like the operative at the school gate, as if he had been waiting there for hours. The uncanny synchronization of Elena’s team was staggering. They weren't just reacting to Arthur’s movements; they were anticipating his route through the city's infrastructure with mathematical precision.

"Mr. Vance," the second operative said, his voice echoing smoothly off the curved concrete walls. "Mrs. Vance sends her regards. She hopes the underground tour hasn't been too taxing on the young lady."

Arthur’s mind raced, calculating distances and angles. Behind them was the long tunnel leading back to the loading dock, likely now blocked by the first operative. Ahead of them was the junction and the final stretch toward the harbor canals. To the left, a smaller, narrower drainage pipe sloped upward toward the basement of the old municipal courthouse—a building with federal jurisdiction and armed security checkpoints.

"Don't take a step closer," Arthur warned, his voice hard and resonant in the confined space.

"You have nowhere left to run, Arthur," the operative said calmly, taking one measured step forward. "The financial district is locked down. The harbor patrols have received our manifest. Your resignation papers were filed and approved an hour ago. Legally, you no longer exist."

Arthur looked down at Chloe. Her eyes were wide, reflecting the amber glow of the overhead bulb, but her trembling had stopped, replaced by a quiet, fierce resolve that mirrored his own.

"We're going left," Arthur whispered to her, his eyes locked on the operative.

"On my count," Chloe whispered back, her voice remarkably steady.

"Three," Arthur murmured.

"Two," Chloe joined in.

"Now!"

Instead of lunging forward or retreating, Arthur reached down, grabbed a heavy iron maintenance wrench resting on a bracket beside the tunnel wall, and hurled it not at the operative, but directly into the exposed junction box of the overhead lighting conduit.

A shower of brilliant white sparks erupted from the ceiling with a loud POP, plunging the entire subterranean junction into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

The operative shouted an indistinct command, followed by the heavy thud of running boots slipping on the wet concrete.

"Grab my hand, Chloe!" Arthur yelled over the hum of failing electrical circuits.

He lunged toward the left-hand pipe, pulling Chloe into the narrow, sloping conduit just as a flashlight beam sliced through the darkness behind them, sweeping wildly across the empty junction floor where they had stood only a second before.
