Chapter 6: The Service Corridor

The heavy metal door groaned on its hinges as Arthur slipped through into the narrow service corridor, pulling it shut with agonizing slowness to prevent any clicking sound from betraying his position. The corridor was stark and utilitarian, lined with exposed water pipes, electrical conduit trays, and the hum of the building's massive HVAC system overhead. The fluorescent tubes overhead flickered with a low, buzzing drone that offered a strange kind of acoustic cover, masking the sound of his quickened breathing.
Arthur leaned against the cinderblock wall for a brief moment, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. He needed to loop back around to where he had left Chloe, but the service corridor map stenciled on the wall near the utility sink indicated that this particular hallway was a dead end leading only to the boiler room.
Panic threatened to claw its way up his throat, but he forced it down, drawing on the cold, analytical detachment that had saved his career during previous corporate crises. If this hallway was a dead end, there had to be a maintenance hatch or a ventilation shaft leading back toward the main atrium of the commercial bank above. He moved down the hallway, shining his key fob light along the low ceiling until he spotted a heavy steel access panel bolted to the wall, labeled Sub-Level 2 Utilities.
Using the metal clip of his pen, Arthur unscrewed the four corner bolts with frantic speed. The metal plate fell away with a muffled clatter, revealing a dark, square shaft just large enough for an adult to squeeze through.
A sudden, sharp metallic bang echoed from the heavy service door behind him. The operative had found the entrance.
Arthur didn't hesitate. He hoisted himself up into the vent, his suit jacket snagging on a rusted edge of sheet metal, and wriggled backward into the dark interior just as the service door burst open with a heavy crash.
"Vance," a deep, flat voice echoed down the corridor, devoid of any human warmth or hesitation. "You're only making this complicated for the girl."
Arthur froze inside the metal shaft, his heart pounding so hard he was certain the operative could hear it through the steel walls. The mention of Chloe sent a surge of protective fury through his veins, momentarily eclipsing his fear. He pushed deeper into the ductwork, his elbows scraping against the rough metal rivets, crawling blindly through the gloom toward the faint smell of fresh air and floor wax that signaled the bank's interior lobby above.
When he reached the end of the vent, he carefully pushed open the hinged floor grate and dropped silently onto the polished marble tiles of the bank's after-hours deposit foyer. The room was empty, save for a lone security guard dozing behind a high mahogany counter at the far end of the hall.

Arthur straightened his jacket, smoothed his hair, and walked toward the sleeping guard with a calm, commanding stride that masked the frantic chaos of the last twenty minutes.
