Chapter 8: Unraveling the Network

The offices of Sterling & Vance Philanthropic Enterprises occupied the entire forty-second floor of a sleek glass skyscraper in midtown Manhattan. Two days after Julian’s bail denial, the federal marshals and state investigators executed a coordinated seizure warrant, locking down the corporate servers and restricting access to all executive suites. Clara walked through the sprawling open-plan offices accompanied by Maya Lin, her footsteps echoing on the polished concrete floors where dozens of panicked employees sat at their desks, whispering among themselves or packing personal belongings into cardboard boxes.
"They had automated scripts running every night at midnight," Maya explained, tapping at the screen of her portable tablet as they walked toward Julian’s executive corner office. "Moving fractional percentages from the foundation’s endowment funds into shell companies registered in Delaware, which then funneled the capital overseas. It was clean enough to pass routine external audits, but when you look at the raw transactional metadata alongside the hospital admission logs, the pattern becomes unmistakable."
"And Vivienne Sterling’s role?" Clara asked, her eyes scanning the panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.
"Vivienne was listed as the primary corporate secretary for at least three of the primary shell entities," Maya replied, stopping in front of Julian’s massive mahogany desk. "Which means she wasn’t just a passive observer drinking wine in your living room; she was an active signatory on accounts receiving embezzled charitable funds. Our team just served her with a formal subpoena twenty minutes ago. She’s being brought in for questioning as a co-conspirator."
As if on cue, the frosted glass doors of the executive suite swung open, and two federal agents entered, flanked by Vivienne Sterling herself. Vivienne no longer looked like the untouchable socialite sipping red wine in an evening gown. She wore a simple beige trench coat, her immaculate blonde hair slightly disheveled, and her face devoid of its usual arrogant smirk. Her eyes locked onto Clara with a mixture of disbelief and seething resentment.
"Clara," Vivienne said, her voice tight and defensive as she stopped a few feet away. "You have no idea what you’re doing. Julian made this company what it was. If you dismantle it, you’re destroying the very legacy your grandfather built."
Clara turned slowly to face her, her expression calm, restrained, and completely devoid of anger. She didn't raise her voice; she didn't need to.
"My grandfather built this foundation to support community education and medical research, Vivienne," Clara said softly, stepping closer. "Not to fund your Manhattan penthouse or your offshore accounts. You chose to tie your fortunes to a man who believed ownership equaled impunity. Now you get to share the consequences."
Vivienne’s jaw tightened, her professional veneer finally shattering completely. "You think you’re safe just because the police hauled him away? Julian has business partners you don’t even know about. People who don’t operate within the courtroom system."
"Then let them try," Clara replied steadily. "The recording is out. The ledgers are seized. The game is over, Vivienne."

Detective Miller stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on Vivienne’s arm. "Miss Sterling, let's head down to federal district court. Your legal counsel is waiting in interview room three."
