Chapter 6: The Bail Hearing

The courtroom on the third floor of the Manhattan Criminal Court was packed to capacity. The air was thick with the nervous energy of journalists, legal aides, and curious onlookers drawn by the sensational details of the Vance family scandal. Julian Vance sat at the defense table, wearing a freshly pressed charcoal suit that replaced the navy one from the night of the arrest. His dark hair was meticulously combed, and he maintained an expression of calm, dignified detachment, projecting the image of a successful businessman wrongfully accused by an unstable spouse.

Beside him sat Arthur Pendleton, one of the city's most expensive and ruthless defense attorneys, whose silver hair and tailored demeanor commanded immediate attention. In the gallery, sitting two rows back, was Vivienne Sterling. She wore a wide-brimmed black hat and dark sunglasses, attempting to blend into the shadows, though her nervous tapping of a designer handbag betrayed her anxiety.

Clara sat on the opposite side of the aisle, flanked by Detective Miller and Maya Lin. She wore a high-collared cream blouse that concealed the fading purple bruises on her neck, though the stark yellow and blue scrape on her cheekbone remained visible as a silent testament to the night before. When Julian entered the room, his eyes flicked toward her for a fraction of a second. There was no remorse in his gaze—only a cold, warning glint, as if he still expected her to shrink away from his authority.

Judge Sarah Vance—no relation, though the coincidence had drawn whispered comments in the press gallery—tapped her gavel sharply. "We are here for the bail review in the matter of The State of New York versus Julian Vance. Mr. Pendleton, you may proceed with your motion for release on personal recognizance."

Pendleton rose smoothly, adjusting his cuffs with theatrical flair. "Thank you, Your Honor. My client is a pillar of the Manhattan financial community, a man who has dedicated his life to legitimate enterprise and philanthropy. The allegations brought forward by the estranged spouse are not only wildly exaggerated but stem from a bitter domestic dispute fueled by emotional instability. Mr. Vance poses no flight risk, has deep ties to the community, and requests release on reasonable terms while we prepare our defense against these unfortunate misunderstandings."

Judge Vance listened impassionately, her eyes scanning the preliminary charging documents before her. She then looked up, her gaze shifting to the prosecution table where the assistant district attorney stood alongside Clara.

"The State objects strenuously to bail, Your Honor," the prosecutor countered, stepping forward and placing a heavy manila folder on the podium. "What counsel characterizes as a domestic dispute is, in reality, a multi-million-dollar financial fraud scheme supported by physical violence and recorded self-incrimination. Furthermore, federal and state investigators have recovered original forged documents from a secured safe within the defendant's residence, proving a premeditated pattern of asset stripping while the victim was incapacitated in a hospital."

A murmur rippled through the courtroom gallery. Julian’s head snapped toward his attorney, his jaw tightening as he whispered something urgently into Pendleton's ear. Pendleton’s calm exterior flickered for a split second before he quickly recovered.

Judge Vance opened a secondary file containing the forensic audit summary provided by Maya Lin. She read through the financial transfers, her expression growing increasingly stern. She looked directly down at Julian, who offered a polite, practiced smile that failed to reach his eyes.
