Chapter 12: The Digital Trap

Maya Lin dropped her waterproof laptop onto the metal desk, snapping open the casing and connecting a high-speed data cable directly into the open port of Julian’s burner machine. The screen flickered green as her custom forensic extraction scripts bypassed the basic password protocols and began pulling cached chat logs and encrypted server traffic.

"Whoever was messaging Julian from this terminal didn't just delete the local chat," Maya said rapidly, her fingers flying across the keyboard with intense focus. "They were mid-transfer, attempting to authorize a final wire movement of four million dollars into an unmonitored Swiss bank account."

"Can you trace the destination account?" Detective Miller asked, stepping over to watch the scrolling lines of code cascading down the monitor.

"I can do better than that," Maya replied, a triumphant smile breaking across her face. "The encryption protocol they used has a known vulnerability in its timestamp handshake. The moment they initiated the transfer, their receiving node broadcasted an unmasked IP address originating from a private terminal in Manhattan."

"Where in Manhattan?" Clara asked, stepping closer to the desk.

"Upper East Side," Maya answered, hitting a final key sequence. "A private brownstone registered under an LLC controlled by... Vivienne Sterling’s brother."

The puzzle pieces clicked into place with terrifying clarity. Julian wasn't acting alone, and Vivienne wasn't just a passive witness sipping wine in the penthouse living room. She was the operational coordinator for the entire offshore liquidation network. While Julian was locked in a holding cell facing federal prosecution, Vivienne’s family network was attempting to execute the final phase of the asset theft before the courts could issue a total freeze on all associated properties.

Miller pulled his radio from his tactical vest, his expression hardening as he keyed the transmission frequency. "All units, dispatch team four to the Upper East Side address immediately. We have an active asset flight in progress." He looked over at Clara, his tone softening with genuine respect. "We’re heading back to Manhattan. Your husband’s backup plan is about to collapse."

Clara looked down at the documents on the desk, feeling a profound sense of closure replacing the lingering shadows of fear. The physical scars on her face were nearly healed, but the internal transformation was absolute. She was no longer the victim trapped in her own living room; she was the architect of her own justice.

"Let's go," Clara said, turning toward the door without hesitation. "Let's finish this."
